Scotland, UK – July 1999

This summer is going to be a wonderful time for visiting Scotland, with numerous festivals throughout the season.
June 12-27th
West End Film Festival, Glasgow – Kitch old films for all the family. Phone 0141 339 4298 for details.
July 10th and 11th
T in the Park – All the big name bands you could possibly want crammed into one weekend. Camping before and after.
July 30th – August 8th
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival
August 14th – 30th
Edinburgh International Book Festival – an absolute must, with famous literary names from around the globe. Phone 09065 500010 for more details.
Of course, there is also the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, details of which can be found in the side box.

If festivals aren’t your scene, then the summer is also the perfect time for hillwalking in Scotland’s hills, which are arguably the best in Europe. Don’t forget to pack a jumper and raincoat if you’re going, as the weather can change very fast!
Enjoy yourselves!
Geography

This is the layout of Scotland, with the major cities marked in red. For more information in Scotland’s geography and economics, click here.
And remember: Scotland is a separate nation from England; an easy way to irritate Scottish people is to call them English. England is part of Great Britain, or the United Kingdom, not the same thing.
Accommodation
It’s hard to top the Lonely Planet’s information, but the Tourist Information are always worth a try.
Haggis backpackers are worth looking into for cheap accommodation and transport.
Money
We use Pounds Sterling (£) because we are part of Great Britain, but our notes look very different from English ones.
Weird and Crazy Stuff
or Scottish trivia:
Trace your Scottish ancestry, if you must.
Robbie Burns – Scotland’s most famous poet.
Haggis – Scotland’s extremely tasty national dish.
Possible the weirdest of all, the virtual Irn Bru (pronounced Iron Brew) vending machine – a homage to one of Scotland’s national drinks.
Websites worth a look:
Gaelic, our national language
Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network
A little about me
I’m a student at Glasgow University, hence the Glasgow -orientated view.
I love to travel, and intend to spend two months in the Middle East over the summer (watch this space for photos on my return).
