Singapore - August 2001
By Kartini Abdul Rahman

Events in August
  • 1 - 17 Aug
    The Necessary Community Festival
Community theatre not only means cheap (or free) tickets, but also gives you an excuse to venture into public housing suburbia (30 mins from city centre) and see how and where the average Singaporean lives.

    The Story Tree
Puppetry troupe, The Finger Players, will entertain with stories from around Asia. TNS Black Box, #B1-02, Marine Parade Community Building. FREE tickets available from the venue, tel. 346-7703. 11 Aug at 2:30pm, 4:30pm & 7:30pm; 12 Aug at 10:30am, 2:30pm and 4:30pm. I also recommend crossing the highway and spending some time at the beach after the show, since you're in the area anyway! Ask locals for directions.

    Don't Say I Say
Experience multilingual storytelling theatre as local stars weave together untold stories about growing up in Chinatown and Arab Street. Singapore History Museum, Lecture Theatrette, 93 Stamford Road. Fri 10 Aug @ 1pm, 3pm, 8pm & Sat 11 - Sun 12 Aug @ 2pm, 4pm & 8pm. LIMITED FREE Tickets (max 4 per person) available from all SISTIC outlets.

  • 1 Aug - 2 Sep
    Miss Saigon
The long-awaited broadway musical finally reaches Singapore's shores. Tickets from S$45 - S$125, available from SISTIC outlets or at 348-5555. Shows are at Kallang Theatre, 8pm; weekend matinees 2.30pm.

Ballet Under the Stars - Dancing By Numbers
An invaluable opportunity to watch ballet while munching on chips and beer! Pack a picnic, lounge on the grass and take in an outdoor ballet performance by the Singapore Dance Theatre for S$15 (kids under 6 get in free). Fort Canning Green, 7:30 pm, tickets available from SISTIC outlets or 348-5555.

  • 9 Aug
    National Day
Grand, patriotic parade at the National Stadium, but the (free) tickets have all been snapped up. Watch out for flying machines in the sky and fireworks as night falls. See August 99 article for details. A better bet would be to make your way down to the Singapore Art Museum. "TIME Open Day" means free admission and an array of workshops and tours. Docent tours at 11am, 2pm and 3:30pm. Yoga Workshop in the Glass Hall, 11am and 3pm. Dance workshop at the auditorium, 11:30am.

  • SSO Sounds of Asia
"An exotic blend of Asian musical traditions and Western orchestral textures." The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) performs at Victoria Concert Hall at 8:15pm.
