Introduction
Chiang Mai, Thailand
By Jennifer Leopoldt

Sick of the southern islands? Burned out on Bangkok? Thailand travelers, rejoice - Chiang Mai will give you a change of pace along with a change of scenery. Located 720 km north of Bangkok, this province offers striking mountain views, a smattering of grand caverns, six blocks of the best merchandise in Thailand, and unlimited opportunities to meet local hill tribes or ride an elephant on a jungle trek. Because Chiang Mai is a charming crossroads, many (mini)adventures can be found by merely turning a corner.

Chiang Mai is famous for its remote trekking. However, I was on a tight schedule, so I made the decision to discover the lesser-known wonders of the province without having to get lost in the jungle. Without the demands of staying off the beaten path, I had the freedom to pick and choose my destinations. I climbed the steps of Doi Suthep, spent most of my money at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, descended into the sacred depths of the Muang On Caves near San Kamphaeng and put my Thai language skills to the test in the tiny mountain village of Soppong.

Although I may not have allotted enough time do justice to Chiang Mai, I'm quite satisfied with my choices. I hope you have the fortune to do both!
