Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand - General Info

The Amazing North
Northern Thailand is characterized largely by forested mountains and many colorful hill tribe people; trekking and river rafting add to this. Chiang Mai is the principal northern city and a good base from which to explore the surrounding countryside.

  • Doi Inthanon National Park
    The 1,005 sq km park covers Thailand's highest mountain (2,565 metres).

  • The Wachirathan, Siriphum and Mae Pan waterfalls share the mountain with Meo and Karen hill tribe settlements.

  • Mae Klang Waterfall
    CM's most photographed waterfall is 58 km west of the city at the foot of Doi Inthanon Mountain.

  • Borichinda Cave
    A 10-minute drive or a 2 hour walk from Mae Klang Waterfall.

  • Mae Ya Waterfall
    12 km from Chom Thong market.

  • Ob Luang Gorge
    88 km from CM.

    Bordered by Malaysia (South), Myanmar (West & North), Laos (North & East) and Cambodia (Southeast).

    Climate
    Temperature varies from 19°C to 38°C. Average temperatures are about 29°C; humidity from 66% to 82.8%.

    Seasons
    Hot (March to May), rainy (June to October) and cool (November to February).

    Largest Islands
    Phuket, Samui, Chang.

    Big Rivers
    Chi (765 km), Mun (750 km), Nan (740 km), Chao Phraya (370 km) or 1,110 km, if the Nan, its main tributary, is included.
