Meet, Plan, Go! Austin
Meet, Plan, Go! Austin I am really excited to be part of the hosts and organizers behind Meet, Plan, Go this year. My partner, Keith Hajovsky, and I are co-hosting the Austin event on October 16, when 9 other cities will also have their own Meet, Plan, Go (MPG) events happening. Meet, Plan, Go! (MPG) is an organization that is dedicated to helping people fulfill their dreams of really traveling to experience the world, well beyond the two-week vacation. There are MPG groups active in ten cities around North America, and on October 16, 2012. These ten cities will host events that will provide attendees with inspirational speakers, discussion panels, breakaway sessions, resources, and giveaways to help people connect and plan their own extended travel or career break. Many of the resources, and ways that MPG folks travel, are much like the methods that we use and detail in our book — meant to drastically save money, in many cases making world travel far less expensive than remaining at home. Keith and I attended the Austin MPG event last year, and then early this year we were flattered to be asked to become the co-hosts of this year’s event. For my part, I was motivated to accept hosting because of my passion for travel as a part of life, and even a part of [...]
Take Advantage of Meet, Plan, Go’s Third Birthday
Take Advantage of Meet, Plan, Go’s Third Birthday If you’ve been following BootsnAll for any length of time, you’d know that we work and live our lives by four core values: Embrace Change Make Meaningful Connections Love Learning Work and Play with Passion These four core values align perfectly with the career break movement started by Sherry, Michaela, and Michael over at Meet, Plan, Go!. How better to embrace change than to make your dreams come true by doing the unconventional and taking a career break trip? If you want to make meaningful connections, MPG has organized monthly meet-ups around the country, culminating in an annual event where you can meet other like-minded people. If you love learning, then there’s plenty of knowledge to be gained by taking a career break and changing the course of your life. And if you work and play with passion, then what better way to do so than by working your ass off to be able to take an extended break to go play around the world?     If you are reading this and nodding your head along, then you are probably the kind of person who wants to take a career break to re-motivate yourself. Meet, Plan, Go is currently celebrating their third anniversary, and during the past three years they have motivated and helped countless Americans get over that [...]
Is a career break realistic?
Is a career break realistic? Sometimes the only thing keeping you from doing that thing you want to do is not having someone standing next to you saying, “I’ve done that. It’s awesome. You should totally do that.” Yes, even go-getters sometimes need to be pushed in order to turn a dream into a reality. “I was very excited to know there are people organizing this type of meeting and giving a human-touch reality to the blogs and travel sites I followed for years. The biggest impact I got was to realize that I am not the only one taking a career break. Now I’ve been traveling for 3 months and I am as happy as I can be – this is my dream slowly becoming reality day by day.” – Pablo You’ve heard us talk about the upcoming Meet, Plan, Go! event this year, and you might have been following along with our new weekly series called Round the World Wednesday. Perhaps you’ve read the articles, or read about Meet, Plan, Go!, and thought, “Yeah, that would be cool. But…” – and that’s where you’d insert whatever obstacle you think is keeping you at home. “The Meet, Plan, Go! event helped me to see that there’s no better time than NOW to start! I was amazed at all the people that have already done [...]

Get Your Early Bird Ticket for Meet, Plan, Go! Portland
Get Your Early Bird Ticket for Meet, Plan, Go! Portland Quitting your job to travel the world is a big freaking deal. When I first started seriously contemplating taking a career break, I had so many questions and things to figure out. I spent half my time researching logistics — like budgeting a year of travel expenses and what travel insurance to pick — while the rest of my time was divided between drooling over pictures of exotic places like Tokyo and Istanbul and worrying if I was committing career suicide. And guess what? A few days into my trip, I’d forgotten all about my worries that I wasn’t following the same “path to success” that I’d been working so hard on, and was busy filling my time with meeting new friends, dealing with the logistics of living on the road, tracking down the tastiest food, and taking pictures of local kittehs. Three years later, Meet, Plan, Go! is exactly what I wanted, back when I was planning my trip. Having a community of other career breakers around, takes a lot of the uncertainty out of the equation, so making the decision to Go! is the hardest part. As you can imagine, I’m thrilled that BootsnAll is the Meet, Plan, Go! Portland host this year. So you might want to know that discounted early-bird tickets are on sale starting today! [...]
BootsnAll is hosting Meet, Plan, Go in Portland this year!
BootsnAll is hosting Meet, Plan, Go in Portland this year! Last September, I used the excuse of Portland not being a Meet, Plan, Go host city to hop on the train and spend a few days with friends in Seattle and to attend their Meet, Plan, Go event. I knew I’d have a great time, and I did, hanging out with some of my favorite Seattle travel bloggy types – not to mention finally getting to meet Seattle’s 2010 hosts Warren & Betsy Talbot of Married With Luggage before they set off on their adventure. What I didn’t expect, however, was the sea of new faces I’d encounter at Seattle’s Meet, Plan, Go event. After nearly five years at BootsnAll, I’ve come in contact with so many people planning long-term trips I’ve lost count of them – and lost track of their travels. With the MPG crowd, however, it was a largely new audience – one that I loved getting to know. I really enjoyed mingling before the event, hearing about travel plans and dreams, and sharing BootsnAll’s story. All in all, it was a nice few days in Seattle, and a fun travel-y event. In 2011, however, I’m really excited that I won’t have to go to another city for Meet, Plan, Go – because this year, Portland’s a host city, and BootsnAll is the host! We’re very pleased [...]
