The hot, dry desert of Nevada may seem like a rather harsh camping destination, but in the right time of year Nevada camping becomes a popular escape from the lights of Las Vegas.

Nevada also contains many National Parks that bring travelers from all over the world and most of the state's campgrounds are clustered around these parks.

Great Basin National Park is one of the State's finest. At the base of Wheeler Mountain, Great Basin Park is a small section of the 200,000 square mile section of land that makes up the basin itself. All of the precipitation that comes down in the Great Basin sinks into the ground, evaporates or drains to one of several large lakes contained within the region. It is one of the only places in the world that does not drain to an ocean or sea.

There are several campgrounds in the Great Basin Park. Timber Creek Campground is nearest the park and features a variety of wildlife.

Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake and reservoir in the United States. It's warm summer water and huge area make it a perfect area for recreational boaters and fishermen-even when all the boat launches are busy the lake has more than enough room for all.

Lake Mead is the fifth most visited park in the United States and while there are no designated campgrounds right on the lake's shore, it is legal to bring a tent and a sun-shade and camp on the beaches. Lake Mead's weather system can change suddenly and severely however, so be prepared for high winds.

On the drive in to Lake Mead, the Valley of Fire state park is visible on the left and merges with the Lake Mead National Recreation area. Beautiful, 150 million year old red rock geologic formations are the park's main attraction. Campsites are currently under construction in the park.

Near the city of Reno and Nevada capital Carson City, camping is available at Lake Tahoe. The lake is a beautiful sight in all seasons but preparations should be made for cold weather in the winter.
