At the "gateway to the tall trees country", Standish-Hickey StateRecreation Area offers camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and swimmingon South Fork of the Eel River which winds through the park for almosttwo miles. One of the few virgin redwood stands remaining in this areacan be seen on the Grove Trail.

Standish-Hickey began as a 40-acre campground acquired by theSave-the-Redwoods League in 1922. It was named to honor Edward RitterHickey local lumberman who died of influenza while caring for the victimsof the epidemic of 1918. In the late 1950A?s, the Standish family donatedover five hundred acres, and additional acquisitions through the yearshave brough the parkA?s total acreage to 1,012. Much of the land, clear-cut and then burned over in a disastrous fire in the mid-1940A?s is justnow regaining its former beauty.
