American Legion S F (Hawes) Campground
The American Legion and Peoples State Forests total 3,900 acres and are located in Barkhamsted, CT. The West Branch of the Farmington River, designated as a Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service, divides the two forests and is the center point of river-based recreational activities including camping, trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing. Other recreational activities include hiking, mountain biking, hunting, trapping, snow shoeing, snowmobiling and ice climbing. Seasonal interpretive program includes a nature museum open weekends between Memorial Day and Columbus Day offering displays on forestry, mammals, Native American culture and local history and culture. Formal presentations on specific topics are held on Saturday evenings between Independence Day and Labor Day. Several guided hikes are offered from May through October. The Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground in the American Legion State Forest offers 30 wooded campsites along the river and facilities include flush toilets, showers and a dumping station. Other facilities in the forests include day use recreation areas, picnic shelter and flush toilets.Services

From Hartford, take Route 44 west to Route 318 east in Barkhamsted. Take a left at the stop sign onto West River Road. The campground is approximately 2 miles on the right side. From Rte 8, take Route 44 east to Route 318 in Barkhamsted. Follow the from above. Take a left at the stop sign onto west River Road. The campground is approximately 2 miles on the right side. From Route 91, take Route 20 west (Bradley International Airport Connector) through Granby Center towards Hartland. Left onto Route 219 west. Continue on Route 219 west at the Routes 219/179 interchange. Bear right onto Route 318 west and cross the Saville Dam at the Barkhamsted Resevoir. Left at the stop sign and continue to follow 318 west. At the end of the steel bridge, right at the stop sign onto West River Road. The campground is 2 miles on the right side.
