Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest (NHAL) is the largest of the state forests. With nearly 223,000 acres it offers plenty of natural wilderness and solitude. Due to its large size the forest has been spilt into two areas: Crystal Lake Area and Clear Lake Area for reservation purposes. Check-in / Registration for all Carrol Lake Campground, Clear Lake Area Campground, Indian Mounds Campground family and wilderness sites is at the Clear Lake Contact Station.

To the Clear Lake Contact Station from the intersection of Hwys 51 and 47 travel south, on Hwy 47, for approximately 3.5 miles and turn left on Woodruff Rd. Clear Lake Contact Station will be on the right.
