Small Town Europe

There's a Europe out there that most tourists – and many travelers – never see. It's not the Europe you see on postcards, or in history books, or on TV. It's a Europe that you don't cry over during movies. It's a side of the Continent that is not seen by many travelers – though it's easy enough to see it, if you really want to.

Small town Europe. It's not so much there for tourists; it's just there because, well, like anywhere else not everyone wants to be in the city. But it is there, and if you want to really enrich your time in Europe, the towns and villages dotting every countryside are good places to go.

Small town Europe doesn't even always make the guidebooks, but it should be in your plans. Take a break, try something new. Look on your map for places whose names are in really, really, really small print. Try to find out a little about them, and include them in your journey. Or, as you're on the train heading to wherever, if you see a place that interests you, well, maybe you should just get off there. Many of the best things that will happen on your trip, will happen unplanned, unexpectedly, and this is no exception.

If you've got a rail pass, it's easy to take in the small towns and the wee villages. It's easy to explore the countryside, from good ol' English rambling country to the Swiss Alps. It's a way for you to see what most visitors to Europe never will, and it can give you a better trip than you imagined.
