Being a Good Guest

Over the last couple of years, BootsnAll members have been fortunate enough to meet people who have accepted us into their homes. The benefits to us have been numerous, including great food, security, social opportunities and, of course, financial savings.

Although we do believe in taking the piss, this does not extend to our host’s hospitality. Here are some tips to ensure that your host will be sorry to see you go.

  • Always clean up after yourself. This includes doing dishes, laundry, etc.
  • Cook the occasional meal for your host.
  • Clean the house. Be glad to help with chores.
  • Replace whatever you have used or build your own store of food.
  • Do not rely on your host to entertain you. Most likely they will have a job and may not feel like taking you out every night.
  • Buy a gift for your host at the beginning or end of your stay. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s the thought that counts.
  • Don’t go overboard and totally kiss arse. Remember, they want you there or else they would not have offered.

Basically, try to use your common sense and think about how you would feel if the situation was reversed. With any luck, you will get to return the favour sometime in the future.
