The United States of Electronica

By Courtney S. Ries

Chances are, if you're backpacking in today's modern world, you're going to have a lot of stuff. Clothes, gear, you name it. In the past twenty years, however, travelers have introduced new gadgets that beg to be included on the "must pack" list. Among the most popular? Mobile phones, iPods and MP3 players, digital cameras and even computers.

There are a number of reasons people advocate bringing technology along for the ride, including business and work requirements, a wish to document travels and a desire to remain in closer communication with friends and family.

Others, however, are quick to argue that technology is best left in the closet due to safety concerns, the fragile nature of gadgets and increased alienation from both travelers and locals.

The articles in this section will hopefully give you a better idea of the arguments for and against dragging various technological contraptions around the world. However, keep in mind that in the end, only you can make the decision on what to bring and what to leave at home, based on your interests, itinerary and ability to cram just one more thing into your rucksack.
