Exercising on the Go

Although you may be an exercise fanatic at home, fitness tends to go the way of wine, deserts and local specialities when you're on the road. Although exercise probably shouldn't be the focus of your vacation, it isn't something to forget about either - especially if you'll be on the road for an extended period of time. Making it to the gym probably won't work into your schedule - or budget - but you don't have to drop the dough to ditch the pounds. Simple tricks and exercises can help make fitness a part of your daily routine, no matter where you are in the world.

Explore town at a faster pace: Wake up before your hungover dorm mates, throw on your tennis shoes and explore the area around your hostel in Paris France, backwoods Russia or wherever else you might be. If you're not up for a run, try brisk walking. Don't worry, you already look like a tourist, so feel free to pump your arms for maximum effort.

Take the stairs, the furthest stop, and other tricks: All of those 'little extras' that you do at home can be done here. Get off a stop earlier than your destination (on purpose). Avoid elevators and take the stairs. Practice tightening and releasing your abs while you're waiting for your train.

Flex those muscles: If you rummage through your bag, you'll be amazed at some of the heavier things you carry. Or, check out what's available where you're staying. There's a good chance a London England hostel will have a couple of lagers laying around. Use these objects for biceps curls, hand weights while you do squats and other resistance exercises.
