Smoking on the Road

By Courtney S. Ries

No matter what your opinion is on smoking, you will encounter it when you're traveling. It might be less or more than you would in your home country and you may be amazed at how many people light up - or how clear the air may seem.

The past 10 years have seen a downturn in smoking, especially in Western countries, as the health issues became more clear and governments have had more of a vested interest in the rising health care costs (and their ability to heavily tax the product). Prices will run you as cheap as $.25 in Russia and other areas where smoking is popular and considered 'part of the lifestyle'. Packs in some major U.S. and U.K. cities will cost you more than $10. Backpackers from these areas may be more willing to pick up smoking on the road, as it is relatively cheap, a way to endure yourself to the locals and a quick appetite suppressant.

As a result of this travel habit, hostels in Paris, Barcelona and Prague (among other places) may have relaxed in-room smoking policies. When checking in to your room, inquire about the smoking policy and request one that would best suit your needs. Conversely, hostels in Seattle, Dublin and other areas with tougher smoking restrictions may request that smokers light up at least 100 feet from the building. Again, ask when checking in.

Pay attention to smoking regulations when on a train as well. There might not be smoke-free carriages in some countries, but it doesn't hurt to ask. If a local - or backpacker - decides to strike up in your designated smoke free area, speak up. Your lungs will thank you for it.

Finally, resist the urge to do things because they 'seem cool'. If you smoke or not, you shouldn't allow yourself to be pressured into doing things you're not comfortable with. Respect other travelers, local laws and enjoy yourself on the road.
