Known officially as Kolkata, this capital of West Bengal is the second-largest city in India. Also called the City of Palaces, there is much to see in Calcutta. Visitors are particularly drawn to the religious Kali temple of Kalighat, stunning Marble Palace and Birla Planetarium.

Airfare to Calcutta will be the cheapest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday. Mondays are popular with business travellers and weekends are key dates for holidaymakers wanting the longest trips possible - avoid these dates.

Also consider flights into Dhaka, Bangladesh. To get between the cities, you can grab a spot on a train, bus or flight. Look for cheap flights on no frills airlines. Tiger Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, spiceJet and Alliance Air fly to Calcutta.
