Airfare to the Caribbean

Include Hotels for the Best Deals

Finding discount airfare to the Caribbean is usually easy if you are flexible on which island you’d like to visit. Several of the islands and island chains have direct flights from large US, Canadian, and European cities, while others take at least two more jumps to reach. Not surprisingly, the popular places with the direct service usually have the lowest airfare, but there are exceptions.

Which airlines have flights into the Caribbean?

American Airlines dominates the entire region like an 800 lb. gorilla. Their hub in Puerto Rico is the busiest airport in the Caribbean, and many islands can only be reached by a plane change there. Delta, Continental, and US Airways also have frequent flights into the region, and occasionally have good discount airfares, although American Airlines is often the cheapest.

From Europe, British Airways, KLM, and Air France all have direct service into some islands, particularly the ones that are those country’s overseas territories or former colonies. Many discount airlines also have regular flights during the busy Christmas through April travel season.

Which Islands have the lowest airfares?

In general, the cheapest Caribbean nations and islands for airfare are Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and St. Maarten. It’s often possible to find cheap local flights from Puerto Rico and St. Maarten into some of the smaller islands, so if you aren’t finding low airfare directly you might consider pricing a ticket to one of these hubs and then a separate airfare on a local airline, like Winair or Liat Airlines.

Saving money on your flight to the Caribbean

The peak travel time for the entire region is the weeks around Christmas and New Years, and finding cheap airfare during those times is challenging. Book as far in advance as possible, since prices usually just continue to climb. January through March is the high season, so coming in early December or in April can be a great way to get fantastic weather and lower Caribbean airfare. If you are planning on coming on short notice, you’ll usually find that Tuesday and Wednesday flights have lower airfare since the weekends tend to book up first.
