Airfare to British Virgin Islands
Unlike their next-door US counterparts, it’s challenging to get discount airfare into the British Virgin Islands. The main airport on Beef Island (code: EIS) is not large enough for most long-haul flights, so at least one stop is usually necessary. Most flights to the British Virgin Islands come from Puerto Rico, but there is another good way to get cheaper airfare to the area.
Which airlines have flights to British Virgin Islands?
American Airlines commuter subsidiary has frequent flights from Puerto Rico to Beef Island in the British Virgin Islands. Since American flies to most major US cities directly from Puerto Rico, you usually only have that one stop and this is usually the best chance at discount airfare. You can book through Puerto Rico on several other airlines, but the flight to the British Virgin Islands will still be on American Eagle, and your airfare will usually be a bit higher than on American.
From Europe your best bet is to fly into Antigua from Amsterdam or London, and then fly from there on a smaller plane.
Another way to reach the British Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands are right next door and they are much busier. You can fly into either St. Thomas or St. Croix from the United States and then take a cheap ferry to the British Virgin Islands. This is almost always your best bet for discount airfare into the region.
Saving money on your flight to British Virgin Islands
Peak season into the region is during Christmas and New Years weeks, so book way in advance if that’s your plan. Airfares in early December and in April are also usually less expensive than flying during high season.
Especially if you aren’t booking too far in advance, it’s usually easiest to get the best airfare to the British Virgin Islands on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, since weekends are the most popular and prices on those flights go up first.
