One of the lowest-lying countries in the world – its name translates to mean ‘low lands’ – the Netherlands is known for its liberal policies, emphasis on social justice and most famous city, Amsterdam. Although the terms the Netherlands and Holland are often used interchangeably, this is not technically correct, as Holland only refers to two of the countries’ twelve provinces.
KLM is the national airline, although other low-cost budget European airlines like easyjet, Sky Airlines and bmi fly to and from the area.
Top attractions in the Netherlands include Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank Haus. The Hague, which is the home of the International Court of Justice, and numerous canals, tulips, windmills and clogs also draw attention.
