Rosetta Stone Language Learning Software

The Rosetta Stone software has become an immensely successful business and popular method of learning a second language. The software, which uses a combination of images, text and sound with increasing difficulty as the student makes progress, focuses on teaching students a language much the same way a first language is learned. Rather than using translation and drills, Rosetta Stone seeks to teach grammar and vocabulary intuitively, a method called the dynamic immersion method.

By teaching students to associate the new vocabulary word directly through an image rather than through an English word, they often retain the information better and longer. The program is divided into levels and then lessons within each level, with each lesson focusing on four images, with an associated word and/or sentence for each. Rosetta Stone is also successful in teaching students correct pronunciation by having them both write and say aloud their new vocabulary words. This way, not only is the student learning the word directly with a visual association, he or she is also learning how to pronounce it and write it correctly.

Rosetta is unique from other language learning programs in that there are no formal grammar guides or instructions with the software. Instead, the student is offered sound, image or a video. All of the languages except Latin use the same words and sentences in the same order with the same images, this means that no matter whether you are learning Spanish or Mandarin, you will learn the same basic vocabulary in the same order. There are up to three levels of instruction available, although many languages only have levels 1 and 2, and they can either be purchased individually or bundled at a discount rate. Because Rosetta Stone only has a total of 2 and sometimes 3 levels, students will by no means become fluent using this method of instruction. However, the direction immersion method has proven to be quite successful and using programs like Rosetta Stone can be a great way to get started learning a new language.
