July in Eugene
Summer in the Willamette Valley. The days are warm and long, the nights short and cool. Below is a list of activities for the month of July in the Eugene Area.
Art in the Vineyard
July 2-4 Alton Baker Park, Eugene.
A festival of art, wine, music and food is held along the river on this holiday weekend. Tickets are $5 US for all three days and includes a concert by the Samples.
Oregon Country Fair
July 9-11, Veneta.
This is a massive hippy festival about 10 miles from Eugene. For 3 days, a fair with live music, Oregon goods and food are sold during this festival that draws over 100,000 every year. Free buses from Eugene (Autzen Stadium) to Veneta are available and recommended.
Oregon Bach Festival
June 25 - July 11, Beall and Silva Halls, Eugene.
Celebrating 30 years, while remembering the death of the legendary composer 250 years ago, this festival is very popular. It is not just music by Bach. There are pieces from Mahler, Dvorak, Telemann, Boismartier and Vivaldi.
Eugene is still reeling from the effects of a major event that occurred last month. A group of Green Anarchists staged a peaceful protest in the middle of downtown that became a march through the streets. This march involved some property damage by some rowdy members. The police moved in with tear gas and riot shields and made about 30 arrests. Differing tales emerged and nobody seems to know what is going on. However, it has left a nasty taste and the local media is running story after story.
Summer in Eugene also brings out the shoddy cardboard signs akin to those mentioned in Steve's Melbourne article. The garage sale is so popular in Eugene, that a stroll around any neighborhood will take you to 3 or 4 within five minutes of each other.
I must admit to being surprised by this phenomena. As a newcomer to Eugene, it was my perception that residents tended to hoard all the most useless crap they could and store it on their porches and in their backyards. However, to my surprise, some actually want to get rid of it sometimes and hence, the garage sale. You will have to really search to find gems amongst the rubble, unless of course you want to decorate your house in 60's chic or go to Disco 2000 at the Wild Duck pub.
