Urban Hiking in Savannah
Savannah can be seen in a day if you are willing to leave your car parked, walk and be prepared for a little adventure. It seems like the most common phrase on the lips of all those who call Savannah home is "Only in Savannah!"
You will come to understand this in just a short few hours if you are not afraid of talking to strangers. One of the most common pastimes in this port city is talking about the horrid parking situation and the often more horrifying smells that waft up from the river.
These few drawbacks aside, Savannah will captivate just about any traveler with its pristine historic district that many say was spared from General Sherman's flames by a congenial and well-funded pact with the devil.
Savannah was built on a small expanse of land surrounded by swamp and salt marsh. A trip to this fair city is not complete without some introduction to the Low-country life. An extensive network of waterways snake through all of the Savannah area and separate the Historic District from the common weekend beach facilities of Tybee Island. If you've seen a beach then Tybee is probably not the best way to spend your time while here.
Sea kayaks can be rented from several locations around Savannah and if you are looking for water recreation this is definitely the way. There are several tours that operate in the tidal marshes and numerous guides willing to show you this very different eco-system. Dolphins feed on the muddy banks of these estuaries, as do alligators, heron and hundreds of other species of fowl. An array of turtles can also be seen, including the endangered loggerhead turtle and many more common box turtle varieties are often seen in these same waters.
Bars, Bars, Bars
Savannah loves to drink! If you can't stay in a bar, put it in a plastic cup and hit the streets. Walking with drinks on public streets is a way of life. Here's a list of establishments where you can get a cheap drink to carry around while sight seeing.
Wet Willies 101 East River Street
O'Connell's Pub 102 East Broad Street
B&B Billiards 411 west Congress Street
People Watching
Sit down anywhere. Benches are readily available under live oaks in the many parks and squares or just have a seat in the grass and watch it all go by.
River Street is ripe with people being weird, drunk, funny, scary, happy, silly, etc. All of this and the perfect place for a cheap drink!
