Here's some general info to get you acquainted.

Location
From Phoenix, it's a 4 hour to drive north to the Grand Canyon, and 4 hours south to Rocky Point, Mexico. Also, a one hour flight will take you to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, or San Diego, CA., for about $80 if you book in advance.

Transportation
Phoenix is extremely spread out, and public transport is quite limited. Unless you have a friend to cart you around, you could try renting a car,($20-$40) per day, or, if you find accommodation in downtown Tempe or Scottsdale, there's lots to do within walking distance.

Accommodation
Sadly, there's only one hostel in Phoenix, and it' s a bit dodgy (the neighborhood is downright scary). Plus, it's nowhere near anything to see or do. I'd honestly avoid it at all costs - try to find a cheap hotel, like the Days Inn at Fashion Square Mall, Scottsdale. Unbeatable location - and it's about $40(off season) per room (2 double beds) - not bad, especially if you're in a group.

Nightlife in Phoenix, Arizona
By Layla Halfhill

You want the scoop on the nightlife in Phoenix? Here you are…

Down to Earth Types
There are plenty of bars in town where normal folk can just hang out, have a few pints and enjoy the company of friends or just friendly people.

Long Wong's on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe (ASU country), is a popular hangout, where you can listen to local musicians, drink some beer, and enjoy some really yummy buffalo wings at the same time. The best part is, it is El Cheapo.

Or, do ye fancy a bit o' Guinness do ye? The Blarney Stone is as close as you'll get to an authentic Irish pub. Irish bands play regularly, and there's a whole lot of 'craic' to be had here. It is in the heart of old town Scottsdale off of 5th Avenue on 75th street.

Maybe you're the type of person who likes to listen to old punk music and show off your tattoos. Then the T'T Roadhouse pub is your bag, baby. It's small, and casual, with a great jukebox and an interesting crowd - don't miss it. It is on 68th St. just south of Thomas, in Scottsdale.

You're Not a Complete Snob, But You Feel Like Getting Dressed Up
If you like to people-watch check out Kyoto Japanese Restaurant on Stetson Ave in Scottsdale. They have the best sushi in the valley and are the cheapest as well (bonus), and you can have a real riot watching the crowd while you drink sake bombers at the bar.

Afterwards, you can wander around downtown Scottsdale and find a number of fun bars all within a few blocks of each other, like Martini Ranch, Maloney's, D.J's and Voodoo Lounge. Downtown Phoenix also has quite a few bars in this category, especially near the new Bank One Ballpark.

You're a Complete Snob
If you're too sexy for your shirt, you should probably be in New York or San Francisco. But, if you just THINK you're too sexy for you're shirt, then try Axis and Radius on Buckboard in old town Scottsdale.

Axis is more of a bar, and Radius is a nightclub. They are adjacent to each other, and have the same owners. On any given night, you'll find more plastic floating around in these buildings than a Tupperware party, if you know what I mean.

And I must mention the Cajun House, on 3rd Ave (again, Scottsdale) whose inside is built like a replica of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Also, check out the Merc Bar in Phoenix on 24th St and Camelback, which is like the bar of the same name in New York City, and is quite dark, and ideal for martini drinkers.
