Summer in the city and the emphasis is on street festivals and entertainment. Toronto finds out in July if it was selected as the site for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games.

  • July 1st
    Canada Day
    Canada turns 134 on this day marked by outdoor parties, special events and fireworks. Check the local papers for what's on.

  • July 5-15
    The Fringe - Toronto's Theatre Festival
    More than 90 companies and solo acts are participating this year in various small artsy venues in the uptown area. There is a lot of talent here! Check www.FringeToronto.com for the lineup.

  • July 6-8
    Celebrate Toronto Street Festival
    This 4th annual street festival features many bands, performers and ten stages to enjoy this special events celebrating this cosmopolitan city. See www.city.toronto.on.ca events for further details.

  • July 6-8
    Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit
    This is an annual huge outdoor art show at City Hall (Nathan Phillips) Square at Queen and Bay streets. For further information, see their web site at www.torontooutdoorart.org

  • July 13-15
    The Molson Indy
    Exhibition Place near Lake Ontario is transformed again into a circuit on the Indycar tour, bringing in the biggest names of CART racing. For more information, check out www.MolsonIndy.com

  • July 15-21
    Classical Pursuits Adventure For The Mind
    For six full days, pursue your passion in the classics: music, art and literature. For events and details, check this web site www.utoronto.ca/classicalpursuits

  • July 25-29
    Beaches International Jazz Festival
    This is one of the premier 'happenings' of the year in Toronto. More than 100 bands perform for free on indoor and outdoor stages in the fun area west of downtown known as "The Beach" - and yes, there is a boardwalk! (on Lake Ontario, not the ocean)

  • July 28-August 8
    Caribana
    This is a festival of Caribbean music and culture with groups and individuals from Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean. The famous carnival parade will be on August 4th. See www.Toronto.com/caribana for venues and details.

  • July 28-August 5
    Canadian Men's International Tennis Championships
    This is the third major tennis tournament in the world behind Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Check out their web site at www.masters-series.com

  • August 1st-19
    Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists
    This is the 11th annual event that features more than 80 dance artists. For more information, see www.ffida.org

  • August 2-12
    Summer Works 2001
    This event is limited to Toronto companies and there is lots of talent on view from both new and established artists during this 11-day festival. To see the lineup, check out www.summerworks.ca

  • August 6
    Simcoe Day
    This Monday is an annual bank holiday in Ontario and many offices and commercial places are closed, but tourism is little affected. Check the local papers for closures.

  • August 6-8 (2004)
    Krinos Taste of the Danforth
    The Greek part of town becomes one big street festival of foods of the area and street entertainers on special stages. Go to www.tasteofthedanforth.com

  • August 10-12
    Toronto's Festival of Beer
    This three-day festival features breweries from around the world. Workshops, seminars, and entertainment will be held throughout the weekend. The event will be held at historic Fort York, located on the waterfront next to the Skydome and the CN Tower. See www.totalbeer.net

  • August 17-September 3
    Canadian National Exhibition
    Lots of midway rides, carnival games, exhibits, music and great entertainment shows make up summer's 'last hurrah'. Surf on www.TheEx.com for all the details.
