Toronto, Ontario - June 2000
By Gerald Schwartz

It's June and Toronto's lineup of events expands like wildfire. Here is but a sample with their individual web sites. Reference source is:
Toronto.com - Event Listings

  • June 1-7: Toronto Lion Dance Festival
    A cross-cultural celebration.

  • June 8-10: North by Northeast Music Festival
Dozens of artists perform across the city for three days.

  • June 17-July 8: Symphony of Fire
The world's largest international fireworks competition. Take it from me - having seen it up close over Lake Ontario for the first time last year - it is a WOW exoerience!

  • June 23-July 1: Toronto International Festival Caravan
Discover Toronto's many diverse cultures in this nine-day event a various venues mainly in the downtown core.

  • June 23-July 2: Downtown Jazz Festival
10 days of various sounds and beats make this 14th annual festival a tradition in Toronto.

  • June 24-25: Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival
Cultural performances complement a weekend of races in giant canoes.

    Check Out
The Tequila Bookworm at 490 Queen Street West near Augusta is a very funky café with great food, magazines, books and ambience. This is an ideal place to relax, play a game of chess, dominoes or even scrabble, and people-watch. The neighbourhood is an eclectic mix of shops, from the avant-garde to trendy to second-hand which invites exploring.

One of the most interesting bookstores in the city is Abelard's at 519 Queen West. This is a real bookstore (no food, no music, no coffee) with many one-of-a-kind books - both new and antiquarian: definitely for readers and book lovers.

    Tip
To check out what's on in entertainment during your stay, get a free copy of NOW magazine available inside many convenience and food places in the city's core and also outside in metal boxes. There are comprehensive listings and critiques on all types of theatre, music, film and clubs. Each Thursday, a new edition of NOW hits the stands.
