Toronto, Ontario - October 2000
By Gerald Schwartz

Oh, to be in Toronto now that autumns' here! No, not a quote from Shakespeare but the first few weeks of the month mean falling leaves of all colours and the scent of fall in the air - a great time to visit. Here are some interesting events for the month:

  • October 11-14
    Pottery and Glass Sale
About 90 potters, sculptors and glass blowers from Ontario and Quebec all under one roof. For further details, please see the website.

  • October 15
    Canadian International Marathon
Pro and amateur runners from around the world in a 26 mile test of endurance and determination.

  • October 9
    Canadian Thanksgiving
The second Monday of October is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Be aware that many businesses, banks and other places are closed. Check a local newspaper for what's open and closed, but most places stay open in tourist areas.

  • October 18-28
    International Festival of Authors
An event in its 20th year featuring very popular and avant-garde writers reading from their latest works. For details, have a look at their website.

  • October 20-22
    Toronto Fall Classic Car Auction
Over 500 cars are expected for this event, so if you're a car fanatic, this one's for you. No purchase necessary, I'm sure. See this web site for the facts: www.rmcars.com.

  • October 21-31
    Spooky Spirits and Phantom Ships
Come to the Pier on Toronto's waterfront for a unique and fun experience. Learn about Canadian sailors and hear some ghost tales of the Great Lakes. Great for kids of all ages.

  • October 26-29
    Creative Sewing and Needlework Festival
This huge show features sewing knitting, quilting embroidery and other assorted crafts. Check out www.csnf.com.

  • October 31
    Raptors Home Opener
Toronto's NBA basketball team plays the Detroit Pistons in the season début at the new and exciting Air Canada Centre. See www.raptors.com for more information.
