Vancouver is a Food City!!
By Helen Ho

It is very true that people in Vancouver spent top dollars dinning out, more than people in Toronto and Los Angels. Not because food in Vancouver is more expensive, but because there are so many choices and great cuisine. Ah...irresistible.

You can find any type of food in Vancouver. Greek, Portuguese, Thai, Malaysian, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Russian, Indian, Japanese and, needless to say, Chinese, Italian, and French.

Here is a list of the best restaurants of my own personal opinion, if you would like a more "official" list, read the Vancouver Magazine, April 2000 edition.

  • The details of each restaurant are indicated as such:
    !! Highly recommended, a must go
    $ - Cheap
    $$ - Moderate
    $$$ - Expensive

    Seafood
    $ The Boathouse
    Various locations and cheap eats. The one in English Bay gives a gorgeous view of the ocean and West Vancouver. The summer patio is awesome.

    French
    !! $ Cafe Crepe
    1032 Robson St.
    Yum, Yum, and Yum. New petite restaurant and cute sale-window. You can enjoy even by watching the process of making a crepe or sandwich.

    $$$ Lumiere
    2551 W. Broadway.
    Never been in there in my life, but its high reputation leaves me no choice but to at least mention it.

    Cafes
    $ True Confection
    866 Denman St. & 3701 W. Broadway.
    Over 50 desserts and great late-night hour.

    Casual
    !! $ Sophie's Cosmic Cafe
    2095 W. 4th Ave.
    Prepare to wait in a long line-up on a good day. One of the only restaurants in Vancouver I've ever had to line up to be served.

    Tapas
    $ Bin 941 & Bin 942
    941 Davie St. & 1521 W. Broadway.
    New style of dining and preparing meals.

    Latin American/Caribbean
    !! $ Havana
    1212 Commerical.
    Cuban food with awesome atmosphere and patio.

    $ Que Pasa
    1637 W. 5th Ave.
    Super cheap and worthwhile food.

    Italian
    !! $$$ Lorenzo's Ristorante
    3604 W. 4th Ave.
    Beautiful restaurant and patio, with new furnished lounge. Needless to say the food is great.

    Greek
    $ Le Grec
    2041 W. 4th Ave
    Live music and extensive menu on seafood and vegetarian.

    Mediterranean
    $$$ Mostache Cafe
    2118 Burrard St.
    Wonderful food, I think that explains all.

    $ Vineyard
    2296 W. 4th Ave
    24-hour restaurant with Greek-based cuisine.

    Russian

    Awesome Indian food and inexpensive.

    Chinese
    $$$ Kirin
    555 E.12th Ave.
    Award-wining restaurant with find Cantonese and seafood dining.

    Japanese
    $$$ Tojo's
