Restaurants
Kiera street has it all; fine dining to cheap kebabs. The majority of the restaurants here are Asian, and most run lunch specials for around $6.
My picks:
Amigos 116 Kiera St. Mexican. $2 tacos on Tuesdays.
Jasmin Rice. Thai. Great atmosphere; extensive menu.
Roppongi Japanese Restaurant 102 Market St. Delicious, large sushi platters at an affordable price.

Drinking, Australia's Favorite Sport

Five Islands Brewery. With a terrace overlooking city beach, Five Islands serves food and ten local brews. Try their most potent, the Port Kembla.

North Wollongong Hotel. This feels more like a house party than a bar, with its large back porch and backyard. Tuesdays and Fridays from 5 to 6 you can try your luck and toss the dice to get your drinks free, half price or full. Thursday nights is karaoke; Sunday is the most popular night.

The Beach Bar at Novotel on North Beach is where the crowd heads on Sundays when North Gong closes. Live music or DJ; skinny-dipping afterwards is optional!

Glasshouse Tavern is the place to be on Wednesday nights. There is no cover for students and drinks are cheap if you get there early. The dance floor is always hot and crowded and the terrace lively.

Wanna be a cheap drunk? Well heck, buy some goon!
Although I suspect that this pre-game plan is most popular with the student crowd, it is surely the cheapest way to get drunk. A goon is a box of wine (usually about 4 litres), and you can get them for as cheap as 6$AUD (Woolworth's Liquors). A friend, upon purchasing such was informed by the cashier that he might as well just drink petrol. The medium, dry white really doesn't taste that bad, although we were a little put off when we read on the side of the box that it was made with fish products (note oily sheen floating on top of the glass). So we drank it anyway - "goon" is so much fun to say! It creates an entirely new set of expressions; we had people doing "goon stands", taking "goon shots" and just getting "gooned"!
