Crete Travel Guide
A once glorious historic island, Crete is swamped by way too many package tourists, especially the northern coast, and capital city Iraklion is awfully polluted. On the up side, there's spectacular Minoan ruins wherever you look and, except for Knossos and other major sites, you may well be the only visitor. Bus service is somewhat chaotic (as in: don't even bother looking at the schedule) but efficient and affordable. There's great scenery and good hiking. And the tourists aren't even that hard to avoid, all you need to do is walk a couple of kilometres inland.
