Western New York
While New York City may dominate (and possibly, overshadow) New York's east, Buffalo is the supreme queen of the western half of the state - in fact, it's even referred to as the Queen City.
Attractions in the city of Buffalo - besides the Super Bowl cursed football team the Bills - include the Buffalo Zoo, Main Lighthouse and Buffalo Philharmonic.
Nearby Niagara Falls draws more than 12 million visitors a year. You can travel below the torrent of water on the Maid of Mist boat, peek out from the Cave of Winds or peer down from a helicopter.
In Western New York, you can also relax in Amish country, get a thrill at Six Flags Darien Lake Amusement Park or commune with nature at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge.
