A Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road by Cameron Tuttle begins with the line, "Despite what you've seen in the movies, you don't have to kill a man to go on a road trip. Just wanting to kill someone is enough." Tuttle believes that the perfect way to spice up a depressing, exhausting or boring life is to say, "screw you" to your boss, grab a few girlfriends and hit the road. While this may not work for everyone, this book is a good way to dream.
A Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road is full of practical advice hidden among witty remarks and hard-to-believe suggestions. Almost all of Tuttle's tips play on words, including her section titles: Start Your Engine, On the Road, Off the Road, End of the Road. Cameron Tuttle's tongue is set firmly in her cheek when she recommends using a condom as a change purse when you're wearing a bikini or using a page of the book as emergency roadside toilet paper. But that's just half the fun.
Readers will find themselves laughing out loud when they read the various reasons to hit the road listed at the bottom of each page. Examples include "It's time to hit the road when you send yourself flowers for Valentine's Day" and "It's time to hit the road when the only numbers on your speed dial are for restaurants that deliver." The book is all about females embracing their wild sides, and doing it with a vengeance.
Tuttle comes up with various ways for women to be "Bad Girls" on the road, from using duct tape to create a strapless bra to tips on cooking nachos under the hood. Although using a Nerf football to create big hair and other "Bad Girl" suggestions are far from realistic, they're definitely fun.
That's not to say the book is entirely without practical merit. A Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road includes a list of what to pack, a "How to" guide to changing a tire and tips on getting the cheapest hotel room, among other things. It also offers some less practical advice on how to get out of a speeding ticket, where you can shower for free and your best bets for avoiding a DUI. On-the-road fitness, dating and game tips are also included.
Who will love this book: Any of your bad-ass, or wanna be bad-ass, female friends. Especially recommended for those who are anti-men, or should be.
When to give the book: At any major turning point such as graduation, engagement, divorce or bad haircut.
