FAQ – Coming Home

Do I Need To Have A Job Before I Return?

Obviously that would be a helpful thing to have, but with the economy still not back, it may be difficult. If you do have something lined up for when you return, you’ll be ahead of a lot of people. You can certainly start sending out resumes or job hunting towards the end of your trip, but you probably won’t want to mess with that while you’re still traveling.

Should I Have A Coming Home Fund?

Yes. How much it should be will be up to you and your specific situation. If you’re younger and coming home from a gap year after college, it’s probably not nearly as important to have a big savings. You obviously want some money to come home to, but if you were just coming out of college and not going on a trip, you’d most likely be poor and living with Mom and Dad anyway, so what’s the difference? If you’re a bit older, and you don’t want to move back in with your parents or friends for longer than a few weeks, then having some money set aside that can get you through a few months of not working is a great idea.

Isn’t It Hard Not To Spend That Extra Money While Traveling?

Yes and no. You were diligent and disciplined enough to save enough for a trip of this magnitude, bypassing nights out and weekends away in the interest of saving. This is no different. Just don’t put that extra money in the same place as your trip fund. Start a new account, throw it in there, and don’t touch it until you return.

Is There Anything Else I Should Plan For?

At this stage of the game, most of the other stuff can wait until you are actually getting ready to return. A coming home fund and a place to stay until you get back on your feet are the most important things to consider at this point. Let’s focus on the more important aspects of you trip at this point, like actually getting on the road!
