There are, in Portugal, no shortage of refugees and retornados from the former African colonies. Compelled by race, politics, or both, to vacate their sub-Saharan residence following the revolution of 1975, they invariably described pre-war Mozambique and Angola as Elysian paradises of the most idyllic, tropical, variety.
I therefore required little convincing to participate, years later, in Brigham Young University's first International Volunteers program to Mozambique. I would be one of a team of eight to work with a Danish aid group, ADPP, just outside of Maputo. We were to make our own travel arrangements and meet in Maputo on June 21st, the first day of what was to be a great adventure.
