Richmond is one of the oldest American cities and is known to be a "collection" of neighborhoods, each with its own charm and flavor. Although most of the colonial past has disappeared, several sites linked to the Civil War are still standing.

What to do

The best way to explore the city is by car. The city is laid out in a grid system which makes it really easy to navigate, while the parking spaces are easy to find.

Walking in the The Historic Downtown is a pleasure although the beautiful Bottom area has been affected by hurricanes. Rebuilding continues so you can always enjoy some of the historical charm.

Monument Avenue stretches over quite a long distance and comprises important statues of Confederate heroes J.E.B. Start, Robert E. Lee , Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson.

Maymont Park is one of the nation's most beautiful urban parks, with fountains and lovely gardens. A walk here is not only free but also a delight. Head to Belle Isle and bike or hike the lovely trail. The area also offers incredible views of the James River.

Getting there

Richmond is served by Richmond International Airport (RIC), located east of downtown. The airport is served by all major domestic carriers, which means finding flights to Virginia is quite easy. If you need to get to the airport and back quickly and to save some money, you can book the Richmond Airport Shuttle in advance.

Where to stay

There are plenty of places to stay in Richmond, although the city lacks a real hostel. Check out the hotels in Virginia and find the one which best suits your budget and needs.
