While the modern and sprawling city of Split might not seem like the place you'd want to spend a long vacation, you'd be surprised at how charming and interesting the historic center is. After all, a Roman emperor once built a palace here. And though it's not likely you'll stay in anything called a "palace," a Split vacation rental is a good way to take advantage of all the region has to offer.
Many of the Split vacation rentals are just outside the city limits or a short distance from the city center, giving you easy access to the historic parts of Split while letting you have a break from the tourist crowds as well. The vacation properties here are apartments, as essentially all housing is in the city, and holiday essentials like shops, restaurants, markets and public transportation - not to mention beaches! - are often close by.
Split's claim to fame remains the palace the Roman emperor Diocletian built for himself along the water, and although much of the palace itself has since been appropriated for housing and buisnesses, you can still make a tour of it and see the most historic points. It's likely that even though your vacation rental in Split will give you a bit of peace and quiet away from the tourists, you'll find yourself drawn back again and again to the ancient stone walls and structures of Diocletian's palace.
Of course, one of the best things about a vacation rental in Split is that it's ideally placed for exploring more of the famous Dalmatian Coast with day-trips. The islands make excellent day-long tours, especially Hvar and Brac, as do many of the small towns dotting the coast (such as Trogir, Primosten and Sibenik). There are great national parks to visit, and if you're up for a really long day you might even be able to hit Dubrovnik.
