If the Dalmatian Coast is calling you but you'd rather not stay in the sprawling urban jungle of Split, consider a Trogir vacation rental instead - it's a mere 30 minutes from Split, and positively oozes charm.
The majority of the Trogir vacation rentals are apartments just outside of town, many of them offering incomparable views or access to wonderful beaches. In addition to the inviting waters of the Dalmatian Coast, some of these vacation apartments will also give you access to shared facilities like swimming pools, barbecue areas and private laws or gardens. Most of them are also very close to things every traveler needs, like shops, markets and restaurants.
Central Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage site because it's such a well-preserved medieval town. Its small and cramped alleys are the perfect places to wander and get lost (don't worry, it's tiny - you'll always find your way out), and the historic center is also blissfully car-free. While most of the vacation rentals in Trogir are not in the historic center, this is where you'll find the majority of the most interesting restaurants and shops. The wide promenade along the water is also where you're bound to see some of the most beautiful (not to mention expensive) sailboats you've ever seen outside of Monte Carlo.
Of course, using your vacation rental in Trogir as a home base from which to explore the region more fully is also a great idea. Split is a short distance away and walking through Diocletian's Palace alone makes it worth the trip. The islands just off shore are also interesting places to sight-see, as are the other little towns up and down the coastline. There are also some gorgeous national park areas in Croatia, many of them within day-trip distance of Trogir - including Krka National Park, with it's massive cascading waterfall.
