How To Use RailSaver

Have a question? Please call 1-866-549-7614 (within the USA) and ask for Dave, our Eurail Expert!

It's pretty easy really. You can book your rail pass online, and RailSaver can also suggest passes for you. In fact, you can figure out what rail passes you need, and even buy them online, in about the same amount of time it takes to have a cup of tea.

For starters, here are a few things you can look at straightaway, to get an idea of the best rail pass for your Europe trip (to leave this page open, right-click the links and select "Open in New Window"):

Passes at a Glance
If you're going here or there, then you'll want "X" pass. Shows the different passes available, and which general itinerary, from continent-wide to the country level, best fits each.

RailSaver
Yup. Build your rail pass online – it saves money and takes care of it all before you even put your pack on. Punch in places, get back results... and a rail pass!

Using RailSaver
It's about as hard as making tea. So let's walk you through. Leave this page up and open the RailSaver by right-clicking this link (select "Open in New Window"). First off:

  1. Put the kettle on. You're taking care of your trip, after all; you should relax with a nice cuppa while you do so.

  2. Straightaway you punch in your first name and the first name of your travel bud, if any; add your ages (there are some age-specific discounts), citizenship/passport country, and whether you want 1st or 2nd class.

  3. Depending on how strong you like your tea, you can probably take the bag out by now.

  4. Next you enter the date when and the city where you'll first arrive in Europe (e.g., you're flying from New York to London, landing on April 2, so April 2 is the arrival date, London the arrival city).

  5. Add in your destinations, how you plan to get to each, whether or not the journey there will be overnight, and how many nights you'll be staying. Repeat with destinations until you're done or are out of fields. You can fill in up to 15 destinations at a time (this is the max the database can work with, when coming up with custom itineraries and passes); the form starts with 7 fields, but if you want more just hit the "click here to add more destinations" button at the bottom left of the form.

  6. At the bottom right of the form, hit the "click here to calculate railpass(es)" button. Wait while the database does its thing; if it needs additional info or clarification or anything, it will let you know, then go back to crunching. This can sometimes take a bit, so sit back and relax.

  7. Now this is where it gets cool (the process, not the tea). The database has done its computorial crunching, and it's come back with the different passes and tickets you could get for this trip. Reading through the page, you'll also see when and where you will need to use each pass; you can also find where you'll take included ferries or would be better off purchasing a point-to-point ticket out of pocket.

  8. If you're ready to move on, have another sip and hit the "Purchase Now" button. From here on out, follow along and fill in the fields. Currently you can only add one pass at a time; when you hit "Buy Now" you'll get to see the selected pass. Hit your back button back to the results page, and hit the "Purchase Now" button next to the next pass you want. Repeat until you're done.
This is a general overview of going through the RailSaver. If you have other questions or get confused on anything, hop over to our FAQ. You can leave that page open while you go through the RailSaver, by right-clicking this RailSaver link and selecting "Open in New Window".
