As technology continues to advance, global markets become more integrated, travel more prevalent and the internet continues to connect more and more people around the globe, it seems that world just keeps getting smaller and smaller. With an increasingly globalized world has also come the need to better communicate with people from the far corners of the globe.

Education systems in other countries have stressed the importance of learning a foreign language in schools starting at an early age. In fact, in many countries it is not only obligatory to learn at least one foreign language, but necessary to learn 2 to 3 languages apart from their native tongue. While more people globally can now speak English then ever before, that has put us native English speakers at a disadvantage. In the United States, few people can speak another language fluently, but in a time with more global business, trade and cultural interaction, being monolingual is nothing short of a handicap.

There are many advantages to learning another language. Not only does studying a foreign language often give you a richer, deeper understanding and appreciation for your native language, it can help you communicate with people from outside of your own country. Being able to communicate with people in other countries opens cultural doors, giving you a window into another culture and allowing you to interact with a culture on a much deeper level. Being able to interact and communicate in another language not only can earn you respect and trust, but can allow you experiences not possible for those who are monolingual.

Speaking at least 2 languages also provides a huge advantage in the economic world. As markets converge and businesses open branches overseas, those who speak one, two, three or even four other languages are becoming hot commodities. In a world where we are increasingly being counted on to work together, sometimes the only way to get things done is by finding common ground, of which language is an integral and necessary part.
