The Millennium Trip

Keiron Burchell is a South African engineer currently making his way overland from Turkey to Asia. He estimates his journey will take him six months, culminating with a celebration of the Millennium in Australia.

January 28: Pretoria, South Africa
Keiron's last report from his 6 month journey. Reflections on his trip from after a couple of weeks at home.

December 19: Sydney, NSW - Australia
Crossing into Papua New Guinea in the nick of time, Keiron has to fly to Oz before travelling down the east coast to Sydney.

November 24: Ujung Pandang, South Sulawesi - Indonesia
Keiron recharges the travelling batteries on Kuta Beach, Bali but finds himself on the bad end of a dodgy money exchange.

November 5: Singapore
Keiron is laid low in Singapore, but not for long after a trip to the doctor. The overriding impression in Singapore is one of order and coffee-shop culture has taken the city-state by storm.

October 22: Georgetown, Penang - Malaysia
Trekking and cookery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Keiron discovers a cure for an age old disease and finds that being Orange Tango Man is not so bad.

October 8: Bangkok, Thailand
A taste of Bangkok. The S-21 prison and the killing fields. Angkor Wat, the lost city. Crossing the border between Cambodia and Thailand. And Keiron decides it's time for some changes!

September 27: Saigon, Vietnam
Marco Polo. Did he or did he not make it to China? And exploring the Vietnam coast on a motorbike.

September 19: Hanoi, Vietnam
Tripping on Larium with Micky and Pluto. Laid back Hanoi in sapping heat.

September 13: Kunming, Yunnan Province - China
Climbing a peak near Yangshou, Keiron injures his ankle and receives some interesting, but very cheap, treatment.

September 4: Wushan, Sichuan - China
Chinese family dinners; the food is fantastic, but the questions are quoted directly from the Chinese text book on "How to Chit-Chat with Foreigner".

August 28: Chengdu, Sichuan - China
Be-friended by two Chinese guys, Kieron gets the guided tour of Xi'an. The biggest "Hello" factor can be found in Chengdu.

August 25: Xi'an, China
Cheesecake in Lhasa!! Overland through Tibet and some great fun in the monasteries.

August 10: Kathmandu, Nepal
Hippies and prime rump steak in Kathmandu. Trekking and great views in Nepal and the "Mars Bar Scale".

July 27: Kathmandu, Nepal
Bad Karma and Bureaucracy in India. Keiron has a very close shave in Varanassi!!

July 14: Jaipur, India
The oppressive poverty in India is not reflected in a Bollywood movie. Keiron also has a close shave in Delhi.

July 7: McLeod, India
Crossing the border between Pakistan and India. A stay in the golden temple in Amritsar. And don't point your feet at the House of God.

June 28: Islamabad, Pakistan
The 38 hour train journey through the hottest part of Pakistan leads to some helpful advice from the locals.

June 24: Quetta, Pakistan
A 22 hour bus journey in the scorching heat from the Iran border and a new technique for dealing with nature's calling.

June 12: Malatya, Turkey
Sunrise over the 2000 year old Commagene statues at the top of Mount Nemrut.

June 10: Cappadocia, Turkey
Internet access is easy on the well-trodden backpacker routes.
