There’s always some information we’d rather pass over before visiting a city. Types of banks and embassy locations don’t really get my fire going, but some things you just have to familiarize yourself with. Knowing the nuts and bolts will make your trip a lot smoother and if any problem arises, you will always know where to go.
Banks: General banking hours are Monday thru Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Fridays until 5:00 p.m. As in most cities, there are a plethora of banks to choose from, but Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, and Suncorp are always safe bets. These banks tend to have the most accessible locations and all offer currency exchange.
Currency Exchange: Aside from banks, currency exchange is available at other locations. If you’re in the CBD, check out American Express located on Elizabeth Street or Travelex located between Albert and George Streets.
Medical: Your best bet is the Traveler’s Medical Service. Located at 245 Albert Street, the medical centre has a convenient location, good hours, and an after hours hotline for emergencies (0412/452 400). Alternatively, the Royal Brisbane Hospital is good if you’re in need of more immediate care. For common colds, aches, and pains it’s often just as easy and helpful to visit a local pharmacy (otherwise known as a chemist). The employees know their stuff and can get you the medicine you need to get well quick without the hassle and expense of a doctor’s appointment.
Safety: Brisbane has a relatively low crime rate, but in the case of the unexpected it’s always good to know that dialing “000” can get you in touch with the fire department, the police, or an ambulance. The police headquarters can also be reached by dialing 07/3224 4444. Be sure to jot these down and keep them with you. Better to be safe than sorry, especially while traveling.
Embassies and Consulates: Unfortunately for those in Brisbane, all foreign embassies are based out of Canberra. Consulates are also sparse. The United States, Canada, and New Zealand are not represented in Brissie. Their closest consulates are in Sydney. However, the British Consul does have a location in Brisbane, and it can be found on Eagle Street.
If necessary contact the embassies in Canberra.
British High Commission: 02/6270 6666
Canadian High Commission: 02/6270 4000
US Embassy: 02/6214 5600
New Zealand High Commission: 02/6270 4211
Tourist Information: Pamphlets and advertisements are always scattered about, but the best tourist information can probably be found down in the CBD at Queen Street Mall. Large information booths are stationed in the center of the mall and are easy to locate. If you’re in need of some good travel deals around or from Brisbane, check out Peter Pan Travel on George Street. They have loads of deals and a very helpful staff.
