Surprise – Beirut, Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon

When the idea of going to lebanon first popped into my head in 1999, I thought I was going crazy. I had always thought lebanon was a war torn country with savaged people running all over the place. Boy was I wrong.

The airport in Beirut was just like any airport you could find in Canada and the United States, everything was clean and brand new. The people there were very helpful and very kind.

The streets of Beirut were not what I had expected, I thought it would be a disastrous place with the buildings all busted and things of that sort. Instead I saw a beautiful city with gorgeous buildings and busy streets filled with laughing people who were very hospitable and understanding of my foreign ways (even though their ways there in lebanon where not that different). When I walked in Beirut it was humid and very hot, but wow it was gorgeous. It was built on the mountain and trailed down all the way until it reached the ocean. It spread out in different directions and was filled with life.

I thought that by Lebanon being a foreign country the way of life would be different, their clothes and their food. I was right about one thing – their food was different but it was amazing. They do, however, have a wide selection of western foods and western restaurants. Their clothing is exactly the same, expect I have not seen a many people wearing Prada, Louis Vuitton and guess as much as I have seen in Lebanon. Their language is beautiful and they they live their lives is soo beautiful. I have visited Lebanon four times after that and I plan to go there again. Besides Beirut, the traveler should also visit Nabay, Anjar, Zahle, Bar Elias, Sidon, Byblos, Jeita, Baalbek and many other cities. English and French are widely spoken.
