Sprouting up from miles of cornfields and farm country along the Missouri River is Nebraska's largest city, Omaha. A city in the middle of America's heartland, it is fitting that thousands of baseball fans converge on the city for the famous College World Series every year. Omaha is often overlooked by tourists, but as the birthplace of civil rights leader Malcolm X, legendary investor Warren Buffett and President Gerald Ford, there seems to be something in the water in Omaha.
WHAT TO DO
If you love America's favorite pastime and love to spend an afternoon eating hot dogs, drinking beer and watching baseballs get knocked out of the park, than coming to Omaha for the College World Series could be an ideal vacation. The event is the culmination of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship and has been held in Omaha since 1950.
Another popular tourist attraction in Omaha is the Henry Doorly Zoo, which is one of the largest and best zoos in the country. Here you can visit the largest cat complex in North America while eating an ice cream cone. The 31-acre Heartland Park of America located in the center of town is a great place to take a boat tour of the lake, walk the trail encircling one of the many fountains in the lake or catch a nighttime fountain light show.
Tourists looking for restaurants, shopping and art galleries should head to Omaha's Old Market, which retains its brick-paved streets and horse-drawn carriages from centuries past.
Omaha's Eppley Airfield (airport code OMA) is located close to the center of town, so it is easy to get a flight to Omaha on one of the major airlines flying into the city. If you are planning on driving to the airport and want to save time and money, you can book airport parking at Omaha in advance to make your travel day less stressful.
WHERE TO STAY
There are many hotels in Omaha, mostly concentrated in downtown and near the historic Old Market district. There are also a few youth hostels in Omaha, where budget travelers can save a few bucks by staying in dorm style accommodations. Budget hotels are also easy to find in this Nebraska city.
