BootsnAll Scorecard
5.0 / 10
Lagos scores high on food and on its music calendar and low on the things that make a trip easy, getting around and staying safe, so it rewards travelers with a local contact and punishes anyone improvising from the airport.
- Value
- 5
- Sits on the 5 anchor, since a regulated bus across the city costs ₦430 to ₦1,710 (about 30 cents to $1.30) while Hostelworld showed no Lagos hostel with a free bed in October 2026, so the room, the car and the security are where your money goes.
- Getting around
- 3.5
- Between the 2 and 5 anchors, because the Blue Line covers five stations from Marina to Mile 2, the Red Line runs four or five trains each way on weekdays, and BusinessDay cites a 68.3-minute average one-way commute.
- Crowds and timing
- 6
- Tourist crowds barely exist, but the calendar still bites, with 17.1 inches of rain in June and a December homecoming season that packs flights, hotels and roads.
- Safety and hassle
- 3.5
- Closer to the 2 anchor than the 5, since Canada reports armed robberies at Murtala Muhammed airport and rising ransom kidnappings in wealthy parts of Lagos, and the airport's own car-hire rank quoted ₦30,000 for a ride Bolt priced at ₦6,900.
- Food and drink
- 7.5
- Near the 8 anchor, because the everyday Yoruba plate, amala with ewedu and gbegiri, ofada rice and suya off the grill, is cheap and everywhere on the mainland; it loses half a point because the sit-down scene on the islands costs more and gives less.
- Indie fit
- 4.5
- Just under the 5 anchor, because both the UK and Canada steer visitors to hotel cars and trusted drivers instead of street taxis and buses, so most people meet Lagos through a host, which is a fine way to meet it but not an independent one.
Editorial scores, 1 to 10, against the same written anchors for every city. Half points allowed. The overall is the plain average of the six.
Overview and Things to Consider
Lagos is a lagoon city of about 21 million people by the Lagos State government's estimate, and it doesn't care whether you came. The old downtown sits on Lagos Island, the embassies and big hotels on Ikoyi and Victoria Island, the newer estates along the Lekki peninsula, and most of the people on the mainland, from Yaba and Surulere out to Ikeja and the airport. It's the center of Nollywood and home to the Afrobeats scene Wizkid came out of. Nobody built any of this for tourists.
You'll love Lagos if music is the reason you travel, if you have Nigerian friends or family to stay with, or if you like cities that run on hustle and talk. You'll hate it if you need to wander on foot after dark, ride whatever bus comes along, or travel on a shoestring without a contact. Same-sex relationships are criminalized, so LGBTQ+ travelers face real legal risk. The traffic is the joke everyone makes. In September 2026 BusinessDay reported the deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, saying that anyone who has crossed Third Mainland Bridge at 6pm knows Lagos traffic isn't the problem, it's a lifestyle. He later said he was talking about how commuters consume content, not accepting gridlock.
The 2026 moment is cultural. Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat pioneer, became the first African musician to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the first African pop star named to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Wizkid opens Detty December Fest on December 18, and the festival drew more than 40,000 people in 2025. Behind the party, the practical stuff moved. Uber left Nigeria in September 2026, the main airport terminal is a building site, and a dollar buys about ₦1,330, against ₦461 in mid-2023.
Two things are overrated. The ocean beaches along Victoria Island and Lekki look like the obvious day out, and they're the place both the UK and Canada single out for rip currents and crime. And a stay that never leaves the gated malls, lounges and rooftops of Lekki and Victoria Island gives you a Lagos priced and policed like anywhere rich, which isn't why you came.
How Lagos Got Here
Lagos began as Eko, an Awori Yoruba settlement on the island in the 15th century, later under the influence of the Benin Kingdom, whose Edo name for a war camp may be where Eko comes from. The Portuguese called it Onim and then Lagos. From the 1760s it grew into one of the biggest slave ports on the coast, trading with Brazil. In 1851 the British shelled the town, installed Oba Akitoye and pushed out his rival Kosoko, and on August 6, 1861, under threat of another bombardment, Oba Dosunmu signed the treaty that made Lagos a British colony. The colonial Broad Street Prison built after that is now Freedom Park.
Freed people came back to shape the place. Saro returnees arrived from Freetown, and Aguda families came home from Brazil and Cuba and built in a Portuguese style, which still survives in a few houses such as the Water House on Kakawa Street. Lagos became capital of colonial Nigeria in 1914, saw independence declared at Tafawa Balewa Square on October 1, 1960, and grew fast through the 1960s and 1970s, when the National Theatre went up for the FESTAC festival of 1977. On December 12, 1991 the capital moved to Abuja. Lagos kept the money, the ports, the music and the people.
Getting There and Around
Murtala Muhammed International (LOS) sits in Ikeja on the mainland. Delta flies in from Atlanta and, seasonally, New York, and Europe, the Gulf, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Nairobi and most big West African cities are all one hop away. The airport is mid-rebuild. Terminal 1 closed in March 2026 for a 22-month, ₦712 billion reconstruction down to its concrete core, with a temporary 8,000-square-meter departure hall handling up to 1,500 passengers an hour at peak in the meantime. Two old Wikivoyage warnings still hold. Keep your bag tags, because staff check them before you leave, and don't walk out before you've found your driver, because you can't walk back in.
There's no train to the terminals, so the ride into town is the first test. In August 2026 the airport authority, FAAN, restricted pickups by ride-hailing apps and brought in its own car-hire rank, ACHRAMS, which lists ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 to the city center and ₦20,000 to ₦30,000 to the suburbs. A traveler was quoted ₦30,000 to a hotel in Ikeja GRA, a trip Punch found Bolt listing at ₦6,900; he walked out and took an inDrive home for ₦6,100. After the outcry, FAAN cleared Bolt back on August 27, 2026. Uber announced on September 2, 2026 that it was leaving Nigeria after 12 years. Whatever you book, confirm the plate and the driver's name, since the UK warns of criminals posing as greeters, and Canada suggests arranging your pickup by day.
Entry takes paperwork. Nigeria switched to an online visa and began phasing out visa on arrival on May 1, 2025, and UK government advice now says visa on arrival is no longer available. Visitors from the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia need a visa, and short visits are handled through the Nigeria Immigration Service e-visa portal. The tourism visa is single-entry, 30 days, and can't be extended, and you'll need a passport valid six months past arrival, a return ticket, proof of accommodation and a bank statement. Decisions are targeted within 48 hours. Landing and exit cards are filed online too, and since October 1, 2025 overstays cost US$15 a day. Carry a yellow fever certificate, which the UK says Nigeria requires.
Rail helps, in a narrow band. The LAMATA Blue Line runs from Marina on Lagos Island through National Theatre, Iganmu and Alaba to Mile 2, 102 trips a day Monday to Saturday between 5:30am and 9:50pm, every 8 to 12 minutes at peak. The Red Line links Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju and Agbado in about 50 minutes, but on weekdays only four trains run north and five south, at commuter hours. Red and blue BRT buses run in their own lanes, and since March 2, 2026 a ride costs ₦690 from Mile 12 to TBS, ₦960 from Ikorodu to TBS and ₦570 on the Marina to Lekki route. Every regulated bus is cashless. Buy a Cowry card at a bus stop or train station, because from August 1, 2026 commuters caught paying cash can be prosecuted.
Everything else is improvisation. The yellow danfo minibuses run every route between the mainland and the islands, at fixed fares, though Wikivoyage warns the system is confusing for a newcomer, so ask a local. Okada motorbike taxis and keke tricycles have been banned from Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikeja, Apapa, Yaba and other districts since February 2020, and Canada advises avoiding okadas anyway. For most visitors that leaves a hotel driver, Bolt or inDrive, though Canada calls most ride-hailing apps unsafe and says to hire drivers from reputable companies. Drivers sometimes ask you to cancel the booking and pay them directly off the app. Say no, since the app's trip record is your safety net. Canada also says never share a taxi with strangers or let a driver pick up other passengers.
What's Changed Since 2016
The naira collapsed and then floated. The Central Bank of Nigeria's rate was ₦196.5 to the dollar in the first half of 2016 and ₦461 on June 1, 2023. By January 31, 2024 it was about ₦1,357, and on October 2, 2026 it stood at ₦1,330. For Lagosians the slide fed through to everyday prices, and regulated bus fares rose another 13 percent on March 2, 2026.
Lagos finally got trains. The Blue Line opened in September 2023, cutting a 13-kilometer trip from the mainland to Marina to about 15 minutes, and the first stretch of the Red Line followed in 2024. In 2026 the Blue Line runs 102 trips a day, Monday to Saturday. They're the first urban rail the city has had, and they work, but neither reaches the airport terminals, Victoria Island or Lekki yet.
The entry system changed completely on May 1, 2025, when Nigeria launched its e-visa, started phasing out visa on arrival and introduced electronic landing and exit cards. Since October 1, 2025, the immigration service has enforced a US$15 daily fine for overstays, using those cards to count your days.
Getting in and out of the airport changed three times in 2026. Terminal 1 closed for reconstruction in March. In August, FAAN's car-hire rank replaced the apps at the curb, then let Bolt back in on August 27 after a ₦30,000 fare to Ikeja went viral. On September 2, Uber announced it was leaving the country after 12 years, while Bolt and inDrive said they would stay.
Culture got new buildings. The 1976 National Theatre in Iganmu, renovated with banking-industry money from 2020, was rededicated on October 1, 2025 as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts. In Onikan, a swimming pool built in 1928 as Nigeria's first public pool reopened in 2024 as the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Grab an Uber at the airport." Uber announced on September 2, 2026 that it was leaving Nigeria. FAAN had already restricted app pickups at the airport in favor of its own ACHRAMS rank, which lists ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 to the city center, then readmitted Bolt on August 27, 2026. ACHRAMS quoted a traveler ₦30,000 to Ikeja GRA, where Punch found Bolt listing ₦6,900. Have your hotel send a named driver, as Canada advises, or book Bolt or inDrive and check the plate.
"Nigeria gives you a visa on arrival." That ended with the switch to e-visas on May 1, 2025, and UK advice now says visa on arrival is no longer available. Apply on the official immigration portal before you fly, ignore third-party sites offering faster approval, and print what you're sent. The tourism visa is single-entry, so a side trip to Benin means a new Nigerian visa to come back.
"Go to the Shrine to hear Afrobeats." Fela Kuti was the Afrobeat pioneer, no s. Afrobeats, with the s, is what Billboard calls Wizkid's music, the pop of a later generation. The New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja is where the Fela legacy lives, above all during Felabration from October 12 to 18, 2026. For Afrobeats stars, come in December, when Detty December Fest runs December 18 to 30 with Wizkid opening.
"The city beaches are the easy day out." The UK warns of rip tides and undertows off Nigeria's coast, with drownings every year, and Canada says to visit Lekki and Bar beaches only in daylight and in a group. If you want sand, TVC News points to Tarkwa Bay, quieter than the city beaches and a short, cheap boat ride from the CMS and Marina side of Lagos Island.
"The new trains mean you can skip the traffic." Only along their lines. The Blue Line is fast and frequent between Marina and Mile 2, but the Red Line runs just four or five trains each way on weekdays, and neither reaches the airport terminals, Victoria Island or Lekki. Plan each day around one side of the lagoon.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about timing the trip to Felabration? The festival for Fela Kuti, founded by his daughter Yeni Kuti in 1998, holds its main week from October 12 to 18 in 2026 at the New Afrika Shrine, after a dance competition at the Shrine on October 3, school debates on October 7 and the Dress Fela fashion show on October 10. Yeni Kuti says it draws visitors of African descent from the diaspora every year, and the Felabration site posts the program. By day, go to the Kalakuta Museum at 7 Gbemisola Street in Allen, Ikeja, dedicated to Fela, with his mausoleum by the front gate. This year's art competition opened there on October 1.
Spend a morning on Lagos Island, the oldest part of the city. Start at Freedom Park, the old colonial Broad Street Prison where independence campaigners were locked up, then walk to Tinubu Square and the Shitta-Bey Mosque on Martin Street, built in 1891. On Kakawa Street, look at the Water House, a mid-19th-century Brazilian-style house built by a man returned from slavery in Brazil; it's private, so look from outside. Finish in Onikan at the John Randle Centre, whose interactive Yoruba galleries hold loans from Wole Soyinka, Ebenezer Obey and the Kuti family.
Eat on the mainland. The Yoruba plate to order is amala, a dark swallow made from dried yam flour, with ewedu greens and gbegiri, a black-eyed bean soup. Wikivoyage's Surulere listings send you to Ofadaboy on Mba Street for ofada rice with its sauce and to Suya Spot on Akerele Street for suya, spiced beef grilled on skewers. Go with someone who knows the buka, the canteens where the food is best, and eat at lunch.
Have you thought about the Lekki Conservation Centre? TVC describes it as a forest reserve with a nature trail, wildlife viewing and the longest canopy walkway in Africa. Go at opening time, before the heat and the weekend crowds, and pair it with the Lekki Art Market, which Wikivoyage names as one of the better places in the city to shop.
Take a day for Badagry, the old slave port near the Benin border, about an hour from Lagos by car. On a budget, ride the Blue Line from Marina to Mile 2, then the regulated bus from Mile 2 to Badagry for ₦1,140. In town, the Badagry Heritage Museum fills the 1863 district officer's office, the First Storey Building in Nigeria dates from 1845, and the Seriki Abass barracoon was built by Brazilian slave traders in 1840. A walk of about 800 meters leads to the Point of No Return on the Atlantic shore. Wear proper shoes.
For a day out of the city, take the standard-gauge train the Nigerian Railway Corporation runs from Lagos to Ibadan, which calls at Abeokuta. Trains leave from Mobolaji Johnson, the new central station on the mainland. In Abeokuta, Olumo Rock is the reason to stop, a historic fortress rock with stairs or a lift to the top and a view over the city. Check times with the railway the day before you go.
The Part Most Guides Miss
Lagos is built on water, and the water is how to beat it. Lagos Ferry Services boats work out of the Five Cowries Terminal in Ikoyi, and the operator says it has carried 4.4 million passengers in five years, with the 2025 festive season its busiest ever as people headed to beach houses and coastal resorts. From a boat the city makes sense in a way it never does from a car, with the towers of Lagos Island on one side and the long, low line of the Third Mainland Bridge across the lagoon. And the same Cowry card that works on the trains pays the fare. Ask your host which jetties and routes are running.
Where to Base Yourself
Victoria Island and Ikoyi. The default for a first trip, and for good reason. Wikivoyage points first-timers to Victoria Island hotels because so much of what visitors want is close, the embassies are here, Lagos Island's sights are a short drive west, and the ferries leave from Five Cowries in Ikoyi. The Blue Line starts at Marina, just across the water on Lagos Island. The catch is cost, and the evening traffic when you head for the mainland.
Lekki Phase 1. The newer, glossier side of the city, with the conservation center and the Lekki Art Market down the expressway, and the pick for groups who want apartments and a pool, above all in December. The catch is distance. Lekki is a long way from Lagos Island and the mainland, the expressway jams, the beaches come with Canada's daylight-only warning, and the airport is on the far side of the city, so leave hours for a flight.
Ikeja GRA. The practical base if you're here for the music. The airport is next door, Bolt quoted ₦6,900 from arrivals to a hotel here in August 2026, and the New Afrika Shrine, the Kalakuta Museum and the Red Line's Ikeja station are close. Wikivoyage lists several hotels in GRA and along the airport road. The catch is distance from Lagos Island and the islands, which means a long drive in traffic.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Budget by the big costs, because the small ones hardly register. A regulated bus fare runs ₦430 to ₦1,710 (about 30 cents to $1.30), and an app ride from the airport to Ikeja ran ₦6,100 to ₦6,900 ($4.60 to $5.20) in August 2026. Beds are the problem. Hostelworld's sample hostel price is about £18 (around $24) a night, but in October 2026 it showed no Lagos hostel with space, so budget travelers end up in guesthouses, and comfortable travelers pay international hotel prices on the islands for generators, guards and parking. Nigeria runs on cash. Canada advises against cards because of fraud, US dollars are widely accepted, and the UK warns that crime spikes around banks and ATMs.
Be clear-eyed about safety. The UK reports high levels of violent street crime across Nigeria, including muggings, armed robbery and carjackings on city roads, and Canada says crime in Lagos is high and that ransom kidnappings of foreigners have increased in wealthy areas of the city. Both say to limit road travel after dark, keep car windows up in traffic, wear no jewelry and hold meetings in secure places, and the UK adds to carry little cash. Canada tells visitors not to hail taxis on the street. Protests can start with little notice and have met tear gas and live fire, so leave if a crowd forms.
Health and paperwork. The CDC recommends malaria pills for all of Nigeria, the yellow fever vaccine for travelers nine months and older, and care around rats because of Lassa fever. Canada says hospitals, private ones included, usually want a cash deposit, a payment guarantee or proof of insurance before they treat you. The UK warns of deaths from methanol in unlicensed local gin, so drink sealed brands. Any SIM card has to be linked to a Nigerian identity number, and the government has cut mobile networks at short notice before.
The law is strict where visitors don't expect it. Same-sex sexual activity can bring 14 years in prison, and the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act also covers anyone who helps arrange or even attends an event seen as a same-sex wedding. Photographing government buildings, military sites or airports can get you arrested. Dress modestly at mosques and churches, and during Ramadan don't eat or drink in public in Muslim areas. The city is busiest in December, when the festival and concert season fills it, the ferries run their heaviest schedules and the roads get worse.

If Lagos Is Part of a Longer Trip
Lagos fits best at one end of a coastal route. Flights link it to most big West African cities, including Accra and Lomé in Togo, and long-haul flights go to London, Atlanta, New York (seasonally), Paris, Amsterdam, Istanbul and Dubai. Addis Ababa and Nairobi connect you to the east. If you're stringing several of these together, an open-jaw ticket that flies into Accra and out of Lagos saves backtracking, and AirTreks builds that kind of routing.
Overland, the Benin border at Seme is about 20 minutes beyond Badagry. Benin issues visas online through its e-visa portal, and the UK says extra checks are in place at the Nigeria-Benin border. Sequence it carefully. Nigeria's tourism visa is single-entry, so cross into Benin and you need a new Nigerian visa to come back. That's the case for running the coast west to east, Accra to Lomé to Cotonou, and finishing in Lagos.
Inland Nigeria is where to slow down and check the map. The train to Abeokuta and Ibadan is the easy trip from Lagos. The UK advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara, against all but essential travel to more than a dozen other states, and against all travel to the riverine areas of the Niger Delta, so a long Nigerian loop takes far more planning than a West African coastal one.
Yearly Things to Consider
The rains set the calendar. Lagos stays between 83°F and 90°F (28°C and 32°C) all year, so heat isn't the variable. The dry season runs from November to March, with January and December averaging 0.4 inches of rain. The wet season builds through April and May and peaks in June at 17.1 inches, then eases into a short dry spell in August, at 3.6 inches, before a second peak of 8.6 inches in September.
Here's the counterintuitive call. December is the famous month, with homecomings, Detty December Fest from December 18 to 30 and a city that barely sleeps, but it's also when flights, rooms and traffic are at their worst. Mid-October is better value if music is the point, because Felabration fills the Shrine and the rest of the city is working as normal. Late January and February are the calm, dry pick for everything else.
Lagos month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 89°F (32°C) | 0.4 in | Shoulder | Driest month. December visitors fly home after New Year. |
| February | 90°F (32°C) | 1.6 in | Shoulder | Dry and hot, and the quietest stretch for visitors. |
| March | 90°F (32°C) | 2.7 in | Shoulder | The hottest highs of the year. |
| April | 89°F (32°C) | 5.7 in | Low | The rains return. |
| May | 88°F (31°C) | 9.3 in | Low | The wet season sets in. |
| June | 85°F (29°C) | 17.1 in | Low | Wettest month by far. Expect slow roads. |
| July | 83°F (28°C) | 8.2 in | Low | Coolest highs of the year, still wet. |
| August | 83°F (28°C) | 3.6 in | Low | A short dry spell in the middle of the rains. |
| September | 84°F (29°C) | 8.6 in | Low | Second rain peak. |
| October | 86°F (30°C) | 7.4 in | Shoulder | Felabration, October 12 to 18 in 2026. |
| November | 89°F (31°C) | 2.0 in | Shoulder | Rains end and the dry season begins. |
| December | 89°F (32°C) | 0.4 in | High | Detty December. Concerts, homecomings and peak prices. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Lagos
Base on Victoria Island or in Ikoyi. Day one, Lagos Island in the morning, from Freedom Park to Tinubu Square, the Shitta-Bey Mosque and the Water House, then the John Randle Centre in Onikan after lunch. Day two, Lekki, with the conservation center's canopy walkway at opening time and the Lekki Art Market in the afternoon. Day three, cross to the mainland by daylight for the Kalakuta Museum in Ikeja and a show at the New Afrika Shrine, and sleep near the airport if you fly out next day.
5 Days in Lagos
Do the three days, then add the water and the coast. On day four, take a boat from Lagos Island to Tarkwa Bay for a sheltered beach, or a Lagos Ferry Services boat from Five Cowries just to see the lagoon. On day five, ride the Blue Line from Marina to Mile 2 and the regulated bus to Badagry, walk to the Point of No Return, and be back before dark.
1 Week in Lagos
With a week, give the mainland real time. Spend a day in Surulere eating amala and ofada rice, catch whatever is on at the Wole Soyinka Centre in Iganmu, and take the train to Abeokuta to climb Olumo Rock, staying over in Ibadan if you want a second city. Keep one day free for the plans a Lagos host will make for you, because there will be some.
2 Weeks or More in Lagos
For a longer stay, settle in Ikoyi for calm or Yaba for the tech and university crowd, close to the Red Line and the intercity trains. Get a Cowry card early so most days don't depend on an app. Weekend trips run to Badagry and the Seme border, Abeokuta and Ibadan by train, or a beach house across the lagoon by boat. Time it for Felabration in October or the December run of concerts if music is the draw.

Lagos Travel FAQ
Not without paperwork if it's African art, and above all if it's old. The UK says it's illegal to export African art, especially antiques, without written authorization from the Department of Antiquities, and Wikivoyage reports that customs and antiquities agents at Lagos airport search bags and confiscate indigenous trinkets. Ask the gallery or seller for an export document, keep the receipt, and pack it where it can be inspected.
No. The CDC tells travelers to Nigeria to avoid contaminated food and water and to follow safe food and water habits against typhoid, so drink sealed bottled water. Ice and raw salads are the usual traps, so take them only where you trust the kitchen.
Getting a local SIM is harder than in most countries, because the UK notes every SIM must be linked to a Nigerian identity number. The easy routes are roaming on your home plan or a SIM registered with a host's help. Networks have been suspended at short notice in the past, so screenshot addresses and bookings and keep a second way to reach your driver.
Usually not. Lagos is easier as a second or last stop, once you're used to the region's money, transport and pace, and it's far better with a local contact. Starting in Accra and finishing in Lagos also puts the airport rides and the e-visa at the end of the trip, when you know the drill.
No. LAMATA's regulated buses run on the Cowry card, sold at bus stops and at Blue Line and Red Line stations, and Wikivoyage notes the same card works on the trains and the ferries. Since August 1, 2026 commuters who offer cash on regulated buses can be prosecuted, and drivers caught taking it have been jailed.
