Destinations Europe

Updated 2026

Europe is the priciest major RTW region but worth budgeting for. You can do solid 6-10 weeks for $60-100/day if you're careful (hostels, Eastern European budget route, self-catering). The continent rewards slow travel and depth - you'll want to spend 2-3 weeks per country rather than rushing through 10 countries in 4 weeks. 2026 brings ETIAS authorization requirements, so plan ahead.

Why Europe on a RTW Trip

Europe is often the final major leg of eastbound RTW trips (especially for North Americans and Australians) or the first leg for westbound routes. The appeal is cultural depth, world-class food and wine, manageable transit, and enough infrastructure that you can actually rest on an RTW trip. Unlike sprint-through-Asia energy, Europe rewards settling into neighborhoods and going slowly. For most RTW travelers, Europe is the "reward" leg after months of faster-paced regions - you've got your travel rhythm down, you know how to handle things, and you want to actually enjoy cultures rather than collect passport stamps.

Budget Context

Daily costs vary dramatically by region (2026):

  • **Eastern Europe** (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria): $30-50/day - cheapest option. Hostels $12-20/night, meals $3-8, museums $3-5.
  • **Southern Europe** (Portugal, Greece, Croatia): $40-60/day - better value than Western Europe. Lisbon, Athens, Dubrovnik are backpacker-friendly.
  • **Central Europe** (Austria, Slovakia): $50-70/day - moderate costs with excellent food and architecture.
  • **Western Europe** (France, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia): $70-120/day - priciest tier. London, Paris, Amsterdam expensive. Berlin more affordable.
  • **Scandinavia** (Denmark, Sweden, Norway): $100-150+/day - budget killers but worth 2-3 weeks max.
  • **Hidden costs**: 2026 ETIAS authorization fee (~€20), tourist taxes (Venice day trip, Barcelona, Reykjavik have fees), public transport passes, museum entries ($5-15 each).

Best Routes Through Europe

Budget Eastern Arc (6-8 weeks): Budapest → Prague → Krakow → Warsaw → Baltic states (Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn) → Berlin. Cheap and culturally rich.

Southern Escape (6-8 weeks): Barcelona → Valencia → southern Spain → Portugal (Lisbon) → Greece (Athens, islands) → Croatia (Dubrovnik). Warm, food-focused, beaches.

Classic West Loop (6-8 weeks): London → Paris → Amsterdam → Berlin → Prague → Vienna → back to Paris/London. Touristy but iconic.

Deep South + East combo (8-10 weeks): Start Portugal/Spain, move through Eastern Europe (cheaper), finish in Germany/Netherlands. Balances cost and culture.

RTW integration: Most RTW travelers hit Europe after Central America, Africa, or Asia. Coming from North America? Gateway cities are Dublin, London, or Dublin. Coming from Asia? You might fly into Istanbul or Athens. Coming from Africa? Lisbon, Barcelona, or Athens work.

When to Go

Summer (June-August): Peak season, warmest, most crowded, highest prices. Great weather but feel-like-a-tourist energy.

Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October): Shoulder season sweet spots. Pleasant weather, fewer tourists, lower prices. Ideal for RTW timing.

Winter (November-March): Cold, many attractions reduce hours, but Christmas markets (December) are magical. Budget travelers love winter prices. Some travelers skip far north in winter.

Avoid Easter and summer school holidays (July-August) for cheaper, less crowded travel.

Visa & Logistics

2026 ETIAS Major Change: From late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries (USA, Canada, Australia, UK, EU citizens traveling outside Schengen, and others) need ETIAS authorization to enter the Schengen Area. Cost is approximately €20. Applications are online, processing takes minutes to days. Apply before your trip.

Schengen Area: 29 countries including most EU nations plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein. You get 90 days within 180 days across all Schengen countries combined.

Non-Schengen countries: UK, Ireland (outside Schengen but visa-free for most). Check which countries you're visiting.

Passport validity: Must be valid for 3+ months beyond your planned stay.

Transport: Buses cheap (Flixbus €5-20 cross-country), trains excellent (consider Eurail pass if doing 5+ train journeys), flights budget airlines €15-50 within Europe.

Health: No vaccines required for Europe. Travel insurance still recommended.

How Long to Spend

Fast track (4-5 weeks): Prague → Vienna → Budapest → Balkans → Greece. Or Barcelona → Portugal → Southern Europe. Hits the sweet spots without overload.

Comfortable pace (6-8 weeks): Mix Eastern Europe budget zone with Western Europe highlights. Slow down in places you love. This is RTW ideal.

Deep dive (10-12 weeks): 2-3 weeks per subregion (Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, Western). Rent apartments weekly. Really know neighborhoods. Most enriching RTW experience.

Slow loop (12+ weeks): You can literally spend your whole RTW in Europe and have room. Pick a region, base yourself, take day trips. The infrastructure supports this.

Most RTW travelers allocate 6-10 weeks to Europe. The region doesn't reward rushing - the whole point is that you can finally slow down.
