Destinations Middle East

Updated 2026

The Middle East is an often-skipped RTW region, but travelers who spend time here leave blown away. You can do 4-6 weeks across Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Egypt for $40-100/day depending on splurge level. The region offers ancient history, deserts, Islamic architecture, hospitality that'll restore your faith in humanity, and food that rivals anywhere on Earth.

Why the Middle East on a RTW Trip

The Middle East bridges Asia, Africa, and Europe geographically and culturally. For RTW travelers, it's the region people bypass out of fear or misunderstanding, which means you'll encounter fewer tourists than elsewhere. You get world-changing historical sites (Petra, the pyramids, temples), desert landscapes, and a pace that's different from everywhere else - people take time, meals last hours, hospitality is genuine. The visa situation is increasingly RTW-friendly, and English is more common than you'd expect in major cities. Most RTW travelers spend 4-6 weeks here or skip it entirely, but those who go rarely regret it.

Budget Context

Daily costs by country/city (2026):

  • **Jordan**: $35-50/day for backpackers. Petra entry is $70 USD single day (or use Jordan Pass bundling visa + sites for better value). Amman is cheaper than tourist sites. Hostels $12-20/night.
  • **Egypt**: $30-50/day but visa fees have increased in 2026 (on-arrival fees raised). Cairo, Alexandria, ancient sites spread across the country. Nile cruises expensive but optional.
  • **UAE (Dubai/Abu Dhabi)**: $80-120/day minimum if staying in hostels, eating cheaply. Tourist attractions (Burj Khalifa, theme parks) drive costs up fast. Visa-free or cheap for most nationalities.
  • **Turkey (Istanbul)**: $40-60/day - excellent value for a major city. Bazaars, mosques, Bosporus views. Hostels $15-25/night, street food $2-5.
  • **Lebanon**: $50-75/day - Beirut is expensive and complex (check current safety conditions). Only consider if deep interest in modern Middle East.

Best Routes Through the Middle East

Eastern Arc (4-5 weeks): Istanbul → Cappadocia (Turkey) → fly to Amman (Jordan) → Petra → Dead Sea → Cairo (Egypt) → Giza/Luxor. Flows east-west.

Luxury insertion (2-3 weeks): If you have money for a mini-splurge - Dubai → Abu Dhabi → fly to Petra → Amman. Mix ultra-modern with ancient.

Ancient history deep dive (4-5 weeks): Focus on Jordan and Egypt. Petra, Wadi Rum (desert camps), Dead Sea, Cairo, Valley of Kings (Luxor). Less touristed than classic routes.

Bridge route (1-2 weeks): Use Middle East as transit. Coming from Asia? Istanbul is a cool stopover. Heading to Africa? Cairo gateway to East Africa flights.

RTW integration: The Middle East works best if you're doing Asia → Middle East → Africa → or reverse. It's a natural geographic bridge.

Key Stops

  • [Istanbul](/istanbul/) - Turkey's transcontinental capital. Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, bazaars, vibrant neighborhoods. 3-4 days minimum. Gateway to Turkey.
  • [Cappadocia](/cappadocia/) - Central Turkey. Fairy chimneys, cave hotels, hot air balloons. Whimsical landscape. 2-3 days if doing overland, or 1 day if flying.
  • [Petra](/petra/) - Jordan's iconic carved city. One of the Seven Wonders. Worth the $70 entry (2026). 1-2 days exploring.
  • [Wadi Rum](/wadi-rum/) - Jordan's red desert. Bedouin camps, desert hikes, otherworldly landscape. 1-2 nights minimum.
  • [Dead Sea](/dead-sea/) - Jordan's ultra-salty water body. Float, mud masks, weird sensations. 1 day stop.
  • [Amman](/amman/) - Jordan's capital. Gateway city, better food than expected, less touristy than Petra. 2 days.
  • [Cairo](/cairo/) - Egypt's chaotic, energetic capital. Giza pyramids are nearby. Old Islamic Cairo has incredible architecture. 3-4 days.
  • [Luxor](/luxor/) - Southern Egypt. Valley of the Kings, temples, Nile cruises depart here. 2-3 days exploring temples, or longer if doing Nile boat.
  • [Aswan](/aswan/) - Southern Egypt. Nile-side town, less chaotic than Cairo. Gateway to Abu Simbel temples. 1-2 days.
  • [Dubai](/dubai/) - UAE's ultra-modern city. Burj Khalifa, Palm Islands, shopping malls. Touristy but interesting contrast to ancient sites. 2-3 days if curious.

When to Go

Best time (October-April): Cool enough to explore without dying in heat. Dry, clear skies. Peak tourist season but perfect RTW timing.

May-September: Brutally hot (45°C/113°F is common). Not recommended unless heat-tolerant. Fewer tourists though.

Ramadan (March-April in 2026): Muslim holy month. Some restaurants close during day, some cultures less accessible. Some travelers avoid, others find it spiritually enriching. Plan accordingly.

Visa & Logistics

Turkey: Most Western nationalities get 90 days visa-free on arrival.

Jordan: Visa on arrival ($40 USD) for most nationalities, or get in advance. Jordan Pass bundles visa + Petra + other sites for better overall value if hitting multiple paid sites.

Egypt: Visa situation has changed in 2026 with increased fees and stricter requirements. On-arrival visas are being phased out - apply in advance through embassy. Fees have risen to $100-150 USD. This is important to plan.

UAE: Most Western nationalities get visa-free entry or cheap visa on arrival. No major advance planning needed.

Health: No vaccines required but travel insurance with medical coverage important. Stay hydrated in heat. Malaria not an issue in these countries.

How Long to Spend

Quick dip (2-3 weeks): Istanbul → Petra → Cairo. Hits key sites without overload.

Regional depth (4-5 weeks): Turkey (Istanbul + Cappadocia) → Jordan (Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea) → Egypt (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan). You'll know these places.

Luxury insertion (2-3 weeks): Fast ancient sites (Petra, Cairo) + 1 week UAE (Dubai) to splurge on nice hotels and flights.

Extended (6-8 weeks): Add Lebanon (if safe/interested), deeper Egypt exploration, or longer Turkey (Aegean coast, Greek island transitions).

Most RTW travelers allocate 4-6 weeks to the Middle East if including it at all. The region rewards slowing down - don't rush ancient sites.
