Answer Capsule
Asia is the most popular RTW region - affordable, diverse, and endlessly rewarding. Southeast Asia is the budget-friendly entry point ($15-30 daily), while East Asia and South Asia add variety. Most RTWers spend 8-12 weeks in Asia, some much longer.
Why Asia for RTW
Asia has everything: beaches, mountains, temples, food, culture, and affordability. Southeast Asia especially is the traditional RTW starting point. You can travel slowly, meet other travelers, and stretch your budget. It's also safe for solo travelers on established routes.
Southeast Asia (Budget Haven)
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar offer $15-30 daily budgets. Thailand is touristy (Phuket, Bangkok) but also has quiet islands and mountains. Vietnam has incredible food and landscapes. Cambodia's temples are stunning. Laos is slow and relaxing. Myanmar is opening up for tourism.
South Asia (Budget + Culture)
India is vast, intense, and transformative. Budget is $15-30 daily (less in rural areas). Sri Lanka offers beaches, tea plantations, and culture in a smaller package. Nepal is trekking paradise. Bangladesh and Pakistan are less touristy but rewarding.
East Asia (Pricier)
China is huge and diverse - from Yangtze River to Great Wall to Guilin mountains. Budget $30-50 daily. Japan is expensive ($80-120) but incredible. South Korea is mid-range ($50-80). Taiwan is underrated and affordable ($40-70).
Central Asia (Adventurous)
Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan offer adventure and cultural depth for intrepid RTWers. Less touristy than Southeast Asia. Budget $20-40 daily. Visas can be complex.
The Southeast Asia Circuit
Most RTWers follow: Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, islands) > Laos (Luang Prabang) > Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Saigon) > Cambodia (Siem Reap, Phnom Penh). Some add Myanmar or Malaysia. This circuit takes 4-8 weeks depending on pace.
Getting Around Asia
Buses and trains connect countries cheaply. Domestic flights (AirAsia, Lion Air) are affordable ($30-100). Crossing borders is straightforward. Some visa runs required (Thailand, Laos). Getting visas in advance vs. on arrival varies by country.
What NOT to Do
Don't rush Asia. You can spend 3 months here and still want more. Slow down, spend 2-4 weeks per country, and really absorb cultures.
Don't assume you need to see all of Asia. Southeast Asia alone is enough for months. Add South Asia (India) if you want spiritual/cultural depth. Skip East Asia if budget is tight.
Don't neglect lesser-known spots (Laos, rural Vietnam, Tajikistan) for famous places (Bangkok, Phuket). You'll meet fewer travelers and have better experiences.
The Bottom Line
Asia is the heart of most RTW trips. Southeast Asia especially offers the best combination of affordability, safety, infrastructure, and rewards. Most RTWers spend 8-12 weeks in Asia. Some extend to 6 months. You can stretch a thin budget far here and have incredible experiences.
