Answer Capsule
Central America combines jungle, beaches, ruins, and affordable travel in a compact region. Seven countries fit easily into 4-6 weeks. Daily costs of $30-60 are realistic, making it perfect for budget RTWers.
The Central American Circuit
Central America works well as a bridge between North and South America, or as a standalone destination. Most RTWers visit Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize.
Guatemala
Guatemala is the cultural heart of Central America. Lake Atitlán has indigenous markets and stunning scenery. Chichicastenango market is vibrant and touristy. Tikal ruins sit in the jungle. Guatemala City is rough and should be passed through quickly. Budget $25-40 daily.
Honduras
Bay Islands offer incredible diving and laid-back Caribbean vibes. The mainland has Mayan ruins (Copán). Many RTWers skip Honduras for Guatemala and Belize, but if you want to dive, it's worthwhile. Budget $25-40 daily.
El Salvador
Small and underrated, El Salvador has Pacific beaches, volcanic landscape, and friendly locals. It's cheap and less touristy than neighboring countries. Pupusas (stuffed tortillas) are the best street food in Central America. Budget $25-35 daily.
Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua is beautiful. Granada is a charming colonial town. Caribbean coast (San Juan del Sur) has beaches and party atmosphere. Managua should be bypassed. Nicaragua is very affordable. Budget $20-35 daily.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is more expensive than neighboring countries but well-developed for tourism. Cloud forests, rainforests, volcanoes, and Caribbean/Pacific beaches. Wildlife is abundant. Infrastructure is excellent. Budget $50-80 daily. Many RTWers use Costa Rica as a slower-paced, more comfortable stop.
Panama
Panama City is modern and expensive. The Panama Canal is iconic. Bocas del Toro islands are laid-back and fun. Darién Gap is dangerous and impassable - you cannot drive from Central to South America; you must fly or ship. Budget $40-70 daily.
Belize
Belize is English-speaking (unusual for Central America), which makes things easier. Mayan ruins (Caracol, Xunantunich) are spectacular. Barrier reef diving and snorkeling are world-class. San Pedro island has Caribbean vibes. Budget $50-80 daily.
Getting Around Central America
Overland travel is straightforward. Buses connect all countries - usually overnight or long days. Flights between capitals are affordable ($60-150). If you're moving south toward South America, you can skip flying.
What NOT to Do
Don't skip the region because it's small. Central America packs incredible diversity into a small space. You can experience multiple ecosystems and cultures in 4-6 weeks.
Don't assume the entire region is dangerous. Tourist routes are very safe. Use common sense, don't flash expensive gear, and avoid traveling at night on buses.
Don't feel obligated to visit every country. Pick 4-5 and move slowly rather than rushing through all seven.
The Bottom Line
Central America is perfect for RTWers on tighter budgets. The region is compact, safe for travelers, affordable, and has incredible diversity. Spend 4-6 weeks here and you'll understand why many RTWers extend their stays. The combination of beaches, jungle, ruins, and friendly locals is unbeatable.
