Planning a round-the-world trip is simpler than it seems. Start with basic decisions and work outward.
Decision 1: Duration
How long will you travel? Commit to a number. Six months, one year, two years. Being vague wastes time.
Duration affects budget, work options, visa strategy, and which destinations you include.
Decision 2: Budget
How much money can you dedicate to travel? Include savings plus any income you'll earn while traveling.
Budget determines which regions you can afford and how long you stay in each place.
$500/month lets you travel Southeast Asia indefinitely. $2,000/month lets you travel expensive regions.
Decision 3: Route
Which regions will you visit? Choose 2-4 regions maximum for your first trip.
Popular routes:
- Southeast Asia only
- Southeast Asia plus South Asia
- Latin America (north to south or reverse)
- Europe (various routes)
- Africa (limited infrastructure, requires more planning)
Decision 4: Specific Countries
Within each region, choose 2-5 countries. You don't need to visit every country.
Visit countries in logical order. Southeast Asia might be Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia. Central America might be Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica.
Geography matters: travel from cheap to expensive regions. Start Asia, end Europe.
Decision 5: Accommodation Style
Will you stay in hostels? Airbnbs? House-sitting? This affects budget and experience.
Most travelers mix: hostels in some cities, apartments in others, occasional splurges.
Decision 6: Income
Will you travel on savings only? Work while traveling? Combination?
If working, secure something before leaving. Don't assume you'll find work upon arrival.
Once These Decisions Are Made
Research flights: Round-the-world tickets or individual flights?
Research visas: Which countries need visas? Apply for ones requiring advance notice.
Research accommodation: What are average costs in each destination?
Get insurance: Travel insurance is essential.
Book logistics: Book first flight, initial accommodation, notify relevant parties.
What NOT to Do
Don't try to visit every country. Pick a route and commit.
Don't book everything far in advance. Book progressively.
Don't research forever. At some point, commit and adjust as you go.
The Bottom Line
Trip planning starts with five decisions: duration, budget, route, countries, and accommodation style. Everything else flows from those decisions. Simple decisions lead to simple planning.
