BootsnAll Scorecard
6.5 / 10
Ottawa scores best on the things a visitor does on foot or by bike, and loses points on the weather calendar, the train and the price of a museum-heavy day.
- Value
- 5.5
- Near the 5 anchor, because dorm beds start around CA$32 and transit caps at CA$12.25 a day, but the War Museum, History Museum and Museum of Nature each charge CA$23 to CA$26 before tax.
- Getting around
- 6.5
- The core is walkable and the canal and river paths are excellent, but the airport is three trains from downtown, Line 1 ran short-handed for much of 2026, and both rail extensions are late.
- Crowds and timing
- 5.5
- Crowds rarely shape a trip, but the weather does, with January highs of 23°F (-5°C), a Skateway that opened zero days in 2022-23, and Gatineau Park hitting capacity on fall weekends.
- Safety and hassle
- 8
- At the 8 anchor, with low crime and almost no scams; the friction is street disorder in the ByWard Market and assaults and robberies at some transit stations that pushed OC Transpo to add constables and cameras.
- Food and drink
- 6
- Good if you know where to go, with close to 200 shawarma shops, Somerset Street's Chinatown and Preston Street, but the tourist core around the market makes it easy to eat a forgettable dinner.
- Indie fit
- 7.5
- Free Skateway, free museum hours, a free shuttle into Gatineau Park and more than 200 km of paved pathway put most of the region in reach without a car or a tour.

Overview and Things to Consider
Ottawa is a government town of about a million people that most travelers visit for a day and leave thinking they saw it. They saw Parliament Hill from the lawn and the ByWard Market at dinner. The better city is spread along water. The Rideau Canal runs through the middle of it, the Ottawa River is the border with Quebec, and on the far bank sits Gatineau, a separate French-speaking city with its own bars, the Canadian Museum of History and a 361-square-kilometer park. The census counted 1,017,449 people in Ottawa proper in 2021, about 1.49 million across the metro area.
You'll like Ottawa if you travel by bike, skate or foot, if you like museums, and if you want a Canadian city where French is part of daily life without the price of Montreal. You'll be bored if you need nightlife that runs past the hour when the shawarma shops fill up, or if your idea of a capital is London. It's a tidy, planned place, much of it laid out by the National Capital Commission, and it can feel as if someone mowed it.
The 2026 moment is mixed. Line 1 of the O-Train lost more than two-thirds of its trains in January to a bearing defect, the eastern extension to Orléans is now waiting on train-control software, and the western one was flooded on Canada Day. Centre Block, the building with the Peace Tower, has been closed for renovation since the MPs moved out in 2018. On the other side of the ledger, the 2025-26 Skateway season ran 56 days, the best in seven years, and the airport train that opened in January 2025 means you no longer need a cab to land.
Overrated? The ByWard Market as a place to spend an evening. The city's own March 2026 report described problems with safety, public confidence and underused space there. Go in the morning for the farm stalls and a BeaverTail, then eat somewhere else.
How Ottawa Got Here
This is Algonquin Anishinabeg land, at the meeting of the Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau rivers. The city began as Bytown, a camp for the men building the Rideau Canal between 1826 and 1832 under Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers, much of it dug by hand. It was a military project, planned after the War of 1812 so supply boats could move between Montreal and Kingston without using the St. Lawrence, the river American forces would have cut. Lumber made the town rich in the decades after, and the mills along the river set the rough reputation of Lowertown and the market district that still hangs about in the stories the walking tours tell.
Bytown became Ottawa in 1855, and Queen Victoria named it the capital of the Province of Canada effective December 31, 1857. It was a compromise, chosen in part because it was neither Toronto nor Montreal. The Gothic Revival Centre Block burned on February 3, 1916, and Parliament sat in what is now the Museum of Nature until the rebuild. After the Second World War the French planner Jacques Gréber drew up the plan that gave the city its greenbelt, the riverside parkways and the National Arts Centre, and moved Union Station out of downtown. That plan is why so much of central Ottawa is lawn, path and federal stone.
Two more dates explain the city you'll see. In 2001 the old city merged with its suburbs and rural townships into one municipality of 2,790 square kilometers, so most of 'Ottawa' is rural land well outside the 549-square-kilometer urban area. In January and February 2022 the trucks of the so-called Freedom Convoy occupied Wellington Street in front of Parliament for about three and a half weeks, which is why you'll see more barriers and security in front of the buildings than a 2016 visitor did.
Getting There and Around
Ottawa International Airport (YOW) is small and easy, and most flights are domestic, with frequent service to Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Porter has built a hub here since 2023 with routes into the United States. Across the Atlantic you get Air France daily in summer to Paris, Air Canada year-round to London Heathrow, and Air Transat's seasonal Gatwick flights. Every departing passenger pays an airport improvement fee, which rose from CA$35 to CA$40 on March 1, 2026, folded into the ticket.
O-Train Line 4 has run from the terminal's Level 3 since January 6, 2025, from 6 am to midnight. The route is the problem. Line 4 goes only to South Keys, where you change to Line 2 north to Bayview, then change again to Line 1 for downtown. Bus route 105 runs 24 hours, every 30 minutes, from the Level 3 departures curb toward Hurdman and St-Laurent, where you can pick up Line 1, and at night it continues to Rideau. One fare covers all of it inside 90 minutes. Wikivoyage puts a taxi to downtown hotels at CA$25 to CA$35 and an Uber or Lyft at CA$20 to CA$25, with rideshare pickup at pillars 12 and 13 on Level 1.
US citizens need only a valid passport, and US green card holders are also exempt from the eTA. Citizens of the UK, EU countries and Australia who fly in need an electronic travel authorization, which costs CA$7, is applied for only on the Government of Canada site, and is usually approved within minutes. Arrive by car, bus or train from the US and you don't need one, only the passport. Canadians, obviously, just show up. Canada is strict about criminal records, and even an old drunk-driving conviction can get you turned back.
In town, OC Transpo runs the buses and the O-Train. An adult ride costs CA$4.10 if you tap a credit card, debit card, phone or Presto card, and CA$4.15 in cash, with a 90-minute transfer window. Tapping the same card all day caps you at CA$12.25, the price of a DayPass. Line 1 is the east-west spine under downtown, with Lyon, Parliament, Rideau and uOttawa stations. Gatineau's blue-and-white STO buses run along Wellington Street past the ByWard Market. Downtown, the canal paths and the river paths are best on foot or by bike, and Ottawa's main train station is 4 km east of downtown at Tremblay, next to the Line 1 station of the same name.
What's Changed Since 2016
Ottawa got light rail on September 14, 2019, when Line 1 opened after the builder, Rideau Transit Group, missed four of its own revised deadlines. Two derailments followed in August and September 2021, and a public inquiry led by Justice William Hourigan reported in November 2022, criticizing both city politicians and the consortium and finding the project's deadlines unrealistic from the start. The trouble has not ended. On January 21, 2026, OC Transpo pulled every train with more than 100,000 km on it after inspectors found metal flaking inside wheel bearings, leaving 18 trains in service and many runs as single cars.
Line 2, the north-south diesel line, closed in May 2020 for an expansion that was meant to take until 2022. It reopened on January 6, 2025, running to Limebank, on the same day Line 4 began serving the airport. The eastern Line 1 extension to Trim Road in Orléans, first promised for 2022, still had no opening date on October 2, 2026, when OC Transpo said Hitachi needed to reprogram the train-control software and pre-trial runs would slip to November. The western extension to Moodie and Algonquin College, aimed at late 2027, took flood damage at five stations in the July 1, 2026 storm.
The Skateway has become a gamble. The 2015-16 season managed 18 skating days, the 2022-23 season had none at all for the first time since it opened in 1970-71, and the 2023-24 season managed only 10. Then the 2024-25 season ran 52 days and the 2025-26 season ran 56, from December 31, 2025 to March 4, 2026. Plan for it, but don't build a trip around it.
Parliament looks different than it did in 2016. Centre Block closed for a renovation budgeted at more than CA$4 billion and set to finish around 2031. The House of Commons now sits in the West Block and the Senate in the old Union Station, now the Senate of Canada Building, and those are the two free tours. Canada Day 2026 showed the summer risk, when thunderstorms dropped close to 167 mm of rain west of downtown in about five hours.
Smaller changes add up. Tapping an ordinary credit or debit card now works on buses and at O-Train fare gates, at the same CA$4.10 as Presto. Federal public servants were told to be in the office four days a week from July 2026, up from three, and commuters noticed fuller trains and buses that September. The city also elects a mayor in late October 2026, and the future of the ByWard Market is one of the campaign fights.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"The airport has a train now, so it's one easy ride downtown." Line 4 runs from the terminal to South Keys only, then you change to Line 2 and change again at Bayview for Line 1. With luggage, route 105 to Hurdman and one change to Line 1, or a CA$20 to CA$35 car, is simpler. It's still one CA$4.10 fare inside 90 minutes.
"Come for Winterlude and skate the world's largest rink." Winterlude has fixed dates (January 29 to February 15 in 2027) and the ice does not. The Skateway opened zero days in 2022-23 and 10 days in 2023-24. Book refundable, check the NCC's daily status, and know there's a packed-snow walking lane from Waverley to Bank and Lakeview to Dow's Lake when there's enough snow.
"Tour Parliament and ride up the Peace Tower." Centre Block and the Peace Tower are closed until around 2031. The free guided tours now go through the House of Commons, sitting in the West Block, and the Senate, sitting in the old Union Station that is now the Senate of Canada Building. Book on the official Parliament visit site before you go.
"The ByWard Market is where you eat in Ottawa." It's where you're steered to eat. The city's March 2026 report flagged safety and access, public confidence and underperforming public spaces, and the night ambassadors who work it Thursday to Saturday are there for a reason. The better meals are on Somerset Street West, Preston Street and Wellington West.
"Everyone visiting Canada needs an eTA." US citizens and US green card holders don't. Brits, Europeans and Australians need the CA$7 eTA only if they fly in. Cross by land from New York or Vermont on a bus or train and the passport is enough.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about doing the museums on free hours? The Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of History are both free on Thursdays from 5 to 7 pm, the National Gallery is free on Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm, and the Science and Technology Museum is free every day from 4 to 5. Everyone still needs a timed ticket at the War and History museums. If you only pay for one, make it the History Museum, which faces Parliament across the Ottawa River.
Cross into Quebec on foot. The Alexandra Bridge goes from behind the National Gallery to Gatineau, and Kìwekì Point, the old Nepean Point, gives you the angle on Parliament, the Mint and the History Museum that the postcards miss. In summer a small water taxi crosses the river between Ottawa and Gatineau. Old Hull, behind the federal office towers, is where young Ontarians go out, partly because Quebec's drinking age is 18 against Ontario's 19.
Take the free NCC shuttle into Gatineau Park. From May 16 to October 25, 2026 it runs every 30 minutes, six days a week, with no service on Wednesdays, from downtown on weekends and from Montcalm Rapibus station on weekdays, out to Pink Lake, the Mackenzie King Estate and the Champlain Lookout on the Eardley Escarpment, 270 m above the Ottawa Valley. Pink Lake is meromictic, meaning its top and bottom waters never mix, which helps give it that turquoise color. Fall weekends fill the park to capacity, so go midweek. Finish in Old Chelsea, or at Nordik Spa Village, a big Nordic bath complex at the park's edge.
Eat shawarma. Ottawa has close to 200 shawarma restaurants, most of them selling a full wrap for under CA$10, and locals argue about Shawarma Palace and 3 Brothers on Rideau Street. For lunch, the Italian sandwiches at Di Rienzo on Beech Street in Little Italy and La Bottega Nicastro in the market are long-running favorites, and Somerset Street West between Bay and Preston is Chinatown, with Vietnamese pho houses and the Jadeland in a converted house. A BeaverTail, the hand-stretched fried dough, is best eaten on the canal in winter. The company started in Killaloe, Ontario, in 1978 and opened its first permanent store in Ottawa in 1980.
Ride the NCC's car-free roads. From May 9 to October 12, 2026, NCC Weekend Bikedays close nearly 20 km of parkways to cars on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays, and the Capital Pathway runs more than 200 km of off-road trail along the canal and both rivers. Rentabike sits below the Plaza Bridge at the canal, and from there you can follow the canal south to Dow's Lake or cross to Gatineau and keep going.
Go in May for the Canadian Tulip Festival. It exists because Canada sheltered the Dutch royal family during the Second World War, and the Netherlands has sent bulbs every year since. The 2026 festival ran May 8 to 18 around Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake, with 300,000 tulips in that park alone and free entry. The 75th edition comes in 2027.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The best thing in Ottawa is free and has no opening hours. The Rideau Canal Skateway runs 7.8 km from the locks by the Château Laurier to Hartwells Locks at Carleton University, through Dow's Lake, and when it's frozen the National Capital Commission keeps it open 24 hours a day at no charge. People commute on it. You can rent skates on the ice, warm up at heated change rooms and buy coffee from vendors. Skating it at 10 pm on a weeknight in February, under the bridges with nobody near you, is the experience the city is built around and the one most guides reduce to a photo. Out of season the same 7.8 km is a towpath with locks, a bike route and the reason the city exists.
Where to Base Yourself
ByWard Market and Lowertown. The most central base, a short walk from Parliament, the National Gallery, the Rideau Centre and Rideau station on Line 1. The cheap beds are here too, including the Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel in the 1862 Carleton County jail, where you can sleep in an actual cell. The catch is the street at night, especially toward Lowertown East, where outreach workers deal with addiction and homelessness. Fine for most travelers, but pick a room off the bar streets.
Centretown and Elgin Street. South of Parliament and west of the canal, with Elgin and Bank streets for restaurants and bars, the Museum of Nature at McLeod and Metcalfe, and the canal paths a few blocks away. It's the easiest base for a winter trip, since you can walk to the Skateway in skates in a bag. Less character than the market, more groceries and fewer drunk people at 2 am.
Hintonburg and Wellington West. The west-end strip along Wellington Street West where locals eat, with Parkdale Market, Hintonburger, Suzy Q Doughnuts, the Elmdale Tavern and the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Little Italy and Preston Street are next door. You're a few minutes from Bayview and Line 1, so downtown is close by train or bike. What you give up is hotel choice, and Wikivoyage flags some rougher blocks after dark.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Budget roughly CA$80 to CA$110 (about US$56 to $77) a day for a hostel trip, built from a CA$32 dorm, a DayPass capped at CA$12.25, a shawarma lunch under CA$10, a modest dinner and one museum on a free evening. Add one paid museum at CA$23 to CA$26 plus 13% HST and the number climbs fast. Mid-range and comfortable trips are set almost entirely by the hotel, since the rest of the day costs the same. Prices on museum boards and menus are before tax, and a restaurant tip of 15 to 18% on the pre-tax total is normal. Don't tip at counters.
Ottawa is safe by North American standards, and there are no scams to speak of. The real issues are street disorder in the ByWard Market, where the city runs night ambassadors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and occasional assaults and robberies at transit stations that pushed OC Transpo to add constables and cameras. Every O-Train station has emergency call boxes. Wikivoyage flags Lowertown East, Vanier and South Keys for extra care after dark.
Winter is the health issue. A normal January high is 23°F (-5°C) and the low is 7°F (-14°C), before wind chill, and the city averages about 185 cm of snow a year. Bring a hat that covers your ears, real boots and mitts, and don't plan long walks on the coldest days. Summer swings the other way, with humid heat, thunderstorms and the kind of rain that flooded the west end on July 1, 2026.
English and French are both official in city business, and 36.4% of residents speak both. On the Ottawa side you'll get by in English. In Gatineau, start in French with bonjour and most people will switch. Canada recognizes same-sex marriage nationwide, and Ottawa is an easy city for LGBTQ+ travelers. The crowded days are Canada Day, Winterlude weekends, the tulip festival and fall-color weekends in Gatineau Park, plus weekday rush hours now that federal staff are back at their desks.

If Ottawa Is Part of a Longer Trip
Ottawa sits at the top of the corridor where Canada's trains make sense. VIA Rail runs several trains a day to Montreal in 2 to 2.25 hours, continuing to Quebec City in about 6, and to Toronto in 4.75 to 5 hours by way of Kingston, which is 2.25 to 2.5 hours away and makes a good stop at the other end of the Rideau Canal. Toronto trains also stop at Fallowfield in suburban Barrhaven. FlixBus, Orléans Express and Rider Express cover the same routes by bus, and Megabus reaches Ottawa only from Kingston and Brockville.
For a longer North American loop, the natural sequence is Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City by train, then a flight home from Montreal or back from Ottawa. Driving or taking the bus to Ottawa from New York or Washington, D.C. is a land crossing, so Europeans and Australians on an eTA-free entry save the CA$7, though there are also direct flights from both cities of about 1.5 to 1.75 hours. Ottawa's Air France flight to Paris and Air Canada's to London make it a workable gateway in and out of Europe, and if Canada is one leg of a bigger multi-stop trip, AirTreks can build Ottawa in as an entry or exit point. Going west, nonstops reach Calgary in about 3.75 hours and Vancouver in 4.5.
Yearly Things to Consider
Ottawa's calendar has two peaks for two different reasons. Winter brings Winterlude, created by the National Capital Commission in 1979 and drawing more than 500,000 visitors on average over three weekends in late January and February, and the Skateway, which opens anywhere from late December to late January and closes by early March, when it opens at all. Summer brings Canada Day, Bluesfest and the long evenings.
The counterintuitive pick is late September to mid-October. Highs drop from 70°F (21°C) to 56°F (13°C), the Gatineau Hills turn, museum hours are normal, and hotels lose the summer and convention crowds. Do the park on weekdays, when the NCC adds extra shuttle buses from October 1 to 25 and the trails are quieter. March and April are the months to skip, with slush, closed ice and nothing green.
Ottawa month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 23°F (-5°C) | 1.1 in | Shoulder | Coldest month, 17 in of snow. Skateway usually open by mid-month. |
| February | 26°F (-3°C) | 0.7 in | High | Winterlude weekends. Best odds of good ice, and 16 in of snow. Book early. |
| March | 37°F (3°C) | 1.3 in | Low | Skateway closes. Sugar shacks open across the river in Quebec. |
| April | 52°F (11°C) | 2.8 in | Low | Melt and mud season. Cheap rooms, little outdoors. |
| May | 67°F (19°C) | 3.1 in | Shoulder | Tulip Festival at Dow's Lake. NCC Weekend Bikedays start early in the month. |
| June | 76°F (24°C) | 3.7 in | High | Long days and open patios. Changing of the Guard starts late in the month. |
| July | 80°F (27°C) | 3.6 in | High | Canada Day crowds and Bluesfest. Humid, with heavy storms. |
| August | 78°F (26°C) | 3.4 in | High | Warm, busy with families. Changing of the Guard ends late in the month. |
| September | 70°F (21°C) | 3.4 in | Shoulder | Best weather of the year, fewer tourists, color starts late month. |
| October | 56°F (13°C) | 3.5 in | Shoulder | Fall color peak in Gatineau Park. Weekends hit capacity. |
| November | 42°F (6°C) | 2.2 in | Low | Gray and quiet. The War Museum is free on Remembrance Day, the 11th. |
| December | 29°F (-2°C) | 1.4 in | Low | Snow arrives for good, 17 in on average. Ice can form on the canal by month's end. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Ottawa
Day one is the core on foot. Book a free Parliament tour for the morning, walk down to the Ottawa Locks and the Bytown Museum, then cross Major's Hill Park to the National Gallery and out to Kìwekì Point for the view. Eat lunch in the market and get out before evening. Day two crosses the Alexandra Bridge to the Canadian Museum of History, then back for the War Museum's free Thursday hours if the day lines up. Day three is the canal, on skates in winter or on a rented bike the rest of the year, south to Dow's Lake, with shawarma on Rideau Street on the way back.
5 Days in Ottawa
Add two days to the three-day plan. Give one to Gatineau Park, by the NCC shuttle in season or by car out of it, with Pink Lake, the Mackenzie King Estate and the Champlain Lookout, then dinner in Old Chelsea or a long evening at the Nordik baths. Give the other to the west end, with lunch on Preston Street, a walk through Hintonburg and Wellington West, and an afternoon at the Museum of Nature or the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, which has pieces of the Avro Arrow and the shuttle Endeavour's Canadarm.
1 Week in Ottawa
A week lets you treat Ottawa as a base. Do the five-day plan, then take the weekday Autobus Gatineau coach to Wakefield, an artists' town on the Gatineau River 50 to 60 minutes north, for a day of walking and eating. Spend another day at the Diefenbunker in Carp, the once-secret Cold War bunker built to shelter the government from a nuclear attack, and the last day on whatever the weather allows, a full Skateway run, a Bluesfest night or a second pass at the History Museum. A week in winter needs a backup plan for each day.
2 Weeks or More in Ottawa
Two weeks is enough to live in a neighborhood. Rent near the Glebe or Hintonburg, buy groceries at Parkdale Market or the market stalls, and use the Capital Pathway as your commute. Spend weekends away on the train, with Montreal two hours east and Kingston two and a half hours west, or drive the Pontiac on the Quebec side, where a 72-km rail trail runs from Quyon toward Pembroke. Late May to June and September suit a long stay best, with patios open and the city back to its working rhythm.

Ottawa Travel FAQ
Yes, at set hours. The War Museum and the History Museum are free on Thursdays from 5 to 7 pm, the National Gallery is free on Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm, and the Science and Technology Museum is free every day from 4 to 5. Most national museums are also free on Canada Day, July 1, though that's the most crowded day of the year to use it.
Not in Ottawa, where English works everywhere and 60.6% of residents speak English only. Gatineau is in Quebec and French is the working language there, though in the places visitors go most people will switch to English. Open with bonjour and it goes better.
Not for the core, where a car is expensive and you'll spend your time parking. A car pays off for Gatineau Park outside the shuttle season, the Diefenbunker in Carp, and sugar shacks in March. The free NCC shuttle covers the main park stops from mid-May to late October.
Yes. When the Skateway is open you can rent skates on the ice, and there are heated change rooms, washrooms and food vendors along it. If you'd rather not skate, the NCC grooms a packed-snow walking lane beside the ice from Waverley to Bank and from Lakeview to Dow's Lake once there's enough snow.
Walk across the Alexandra Bridge from behind the National Gallery. OC Transpo route 8 runs all week from Dow's Lake to a stop in front of the museum on Laurier Street in Gatineau, and in summer a water taxi crosses the river. Book a timed ticket first, since everyone needs one.
Don't count on it before 2027. On October 2, 2026, OC Transpo said pre-trial running would start in November, to be followed by at least 21 days of trial running and 5 to 10 days of certification. Few visitors need Orléans anyway, since Line 1 between Tunney's Pasture and Blair covers downtown and the train station.
