BootsnAll Scorecard
4.5 / 10
Georgetown scores low on the things a city visit runs on, value, transport and safety, and better on food and timing. It earns its place as the staging post for Kaieteur and the Rupununi, so plan two or three nights, not a week of city sightseeing.
- Value
- 3
- Near the 2 anchor, since Hostelworld listed zero hostels in all of Guyana in October 2026, a Kaieteur day flight runs US$350, and a solo guided market tour is priced at US$440, so only street food and minibus fares feel cheap.
- Getting around
- 3
- Close to the 2 anchor, because the only public transport is private minibuses that Canada and the UK both tell visitors to avoid, taxis need booking, and everything beyond the coast is reached by small plane or tour.
- Crowds and timing
- 7
- Nearer 8 than 5, because about 271,000 visitors arrived in the first seven months of 2026, far too few to crowd anything, and the main cost of bad timing is the May to July rain, when Botanical Gardens normals pass 11 inches a month.
- Safety and hassle
- 3
- Close to 2, because the US rates Guyana Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and the UK names Stabroek Market, Tiger Bay, Albouystown and the Botanical Gardens as places foreigners have been targeted or assaulted.
- Food and drink
- 6.5
- Above the 5 anchor, since Indian, African, Chinese, Portuguese and Amerindian cooking meet in pepperpot, roti, dhalpuri and cook-shop curries, though you'll eat best with a guide or a local, since wandering the market cookshops alone carries risk.
- Indie fit
- 4.5
- Just under the 5 anchor, since the tourism authority itself says the interior is best done through operators, but community lodges like Surama and Rewa and the Sunday Seawall crowd reward travelers who make local contacts.
Editorial scores, 1 to 10, against the same written anchors for every city. Half points allowed. The overall is the plain average of the six.
Overview and Things to Consider
Most people meet Georgetown as a hotel night between a Miami or New York flight and a small plane to the interior, and it shows: the city is low, flat, hot and laid out on a Dutch grid of canals, with wooden churches and verandaed houses on stilts, on land as much as six feet below the high-tide line. The Atlantic is held back by a concrete seawall. On a Sunday evening that wall turns into the whole city's living room, and that's when Georgetown makes the best case for itself.
The 2026 moment is money. ExxonMobil's Stabroek block passed 900,000 barrels a day in late 2025, the finance ministry reported 33.3 percent growth for the first half of 2026, and May 2026 marked 60 years of independence. You see it in the new four-lane bridge over the Demerara, a Four Points by Sheraton on the Heroes Highway and an AC Marriott at Ogle. You also see what hasn't caught up, in minibus fare fights, petrol that ran out at the pumps in April, and medical care the UK still calls very limited.
Who loves it? Birders, people heading to Kaieteur Falls or the Rupununi savannas, travelers who like a Caribbean city that isn't selling beaches, and anyone curious how an oil windfall lands on a place of under 130,000 people. Who hates it? Anyone who wants to walk freely after dark, anyone on a backpacker budget, and anyone expecting the interior to be reachable by bus and nerve alone. It's English-speaking South America with a cricket ground, a rum industry and almost no tourist infrastructure aimed at the independent traveler.
Our advice is to give the city two nights at the start and one at the end of a Guyana trip. Do the Seawall on a Sunday, a guided market morning, the cathedral and the Walter Roth Museum. Then spend your money where Guyana is actually extraordinary, which is the forest and savanna a short flight south.
How Georgetown Got Here
The Dutch ran this coast as the colony of Demerara, and in 1748 Governor Laurens Storm van 's Gravesande put a guard post at the river mouth. The French founded the town itself in 1782 as Longchamps during a short occupation; the Dutch renamed it Stabroek in 1784, and the British made it Georgetown in 1812, after George III. The Dutch legacy is the one you'll notice, in the canals and kokers (sluice gates), built by the Dutch and extended by the British, that drain a city lying below the sea behind its seawall.
Sugar built the place on enslaved African labor, and after emancipation the planters brought indentured workers from India, China and Portugal; May 5, 2026 marked 188 years since the first East Indian arrivals. That mix explains today's food and politics. Independence came in 1966 and the republic in 1970, which Mashramani celebrates every February 23. The Great Fire of 1945 did widespread damage, which is one reason the landmarks that survive, like the 1892 timber St. George's Cathedral and the iron Stabroek Market, read as precious.
The modern chapter started in 2015, when ExxonMobil found oil about 190 km offshore. Production followed, and by 2023 and 2024 the IMF counted average growth of nearly 40 percent a year, among the fastest anywhere. Venezuela's claim to the 160,000 square kilometer Essequibo region is the other background noise. The International Court of Justice finished hearings in May 2026 and a ruling is pending.
Getting There and Around
International flights land at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) at Timehri, 41 km south of the city. The airport's airline list for 2026 includes American, JetBlue and Caribbean Airlines from Miami and New York, United from Houston, Copa from Panama, Avianca from Bogotá since December 2024, KLM from Amsterdam since June 2025, plus British Airways, InterCaribbean and Surinam Airways. The US$30 (G$6,000) departure tax is already in your ticket, and you can fill in Guyana's online immigration and customs form up to 30 days before you fly. CJIA asks for three hours before international departures, and you'll need them.
Book your transfer before you land. The airport runs a licensed taxi rank just outside arrivals, open 24 hours with fixed rates; Wikivoyage puts the ride at about G$5,000 (US$24) and 45 to 60 minutes. The UK warns that gangs have followed cars from CJIA and robbed passengers on arrival, so a hotel pickup with windows up is the sensible call, especially on the late flights. Minibus 42 to the Timehri bus park behind Parliament costs a fraction of that, and Canada and the UK both say skip it. The arrivals ATMs are Scotiabank and Republic Bank, and only Scotiabank takes foreign cards.
The second airport, Eugene F. Correia International (OGL) at Ogle, is 11 km east of downtown and handles almost everything domestic: Kaieteur flights, Lethem, Rupununi lodges and short hops to Paramaribo. Planes are Cessnas and 19-seat Beechcrafts, and scheduled flights allow 20 pounds (9 kg) of luggage per person, weighed with you at check-in. Leave the big bag at your Georgetown hotel.
US, Canadian, UK, Australian and most EU passport holders don't need a visa. You need six months of passport validity and, if you're coming from a yellow fever country, a vaccination certificate. The UK says British visitors normally get 30 days with extensions available from the immigration department; the tourism authority's FAQ says up to 90 days for non-Caricom visitors, so check the stamp you're given. Canada stresses that you must make sure your passport is stamped on arrival, since an unstamped entry can cause trouble leaving.
In town there's no metro or city bus, just privately run minibuses, which Wikivoyage prices from G$60 for city hops, and taxis, which run about G$400 (US$2) within the city and carry plates beginning with H. Since May 2026 the government has ordered operators to display the official fares inside minibuses, after a wave of unapproved fare hikes. The UK's practical advice is to avoid hailing taxis on the street, use companies your hotel books or official ranks, and save your number for a driver you trust.
What's Changed Since 2016
Oil changed everything. By the end of 2025 output from ExxonMobil's Stabroek block had passed 900,000 barrels a day, up 35 percent in a year by the IMF's count, and the first half of 2026 held at that level. For a visitor, that means a building site of a capital, with a government spending oil revenue on roads, bridges, markets and hotels at a pace you can watch from a taxi window.
On October 5, 2025 the US$260 million, four-lane Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge opened and the old 1978 floating Demerara Harbour Bridge was retired. The drive to the west bank and Parika no longer waits on the floating bridge's daily opening for ships.
The hotel stock is being rebuilt. The tourism minister said in January 2026 that six new hotels had added 600 rooms in five years, with 15 more under construction. The AC Marriott at Ogle (150 rooms) and the 60-room Plaza Hotel on Main Street opened in January 2026, the 172-room Four Points by Sheraton at Houston opened in April, and in August the new Pegasus Suites tower joined Hyatt's network as the Atlantic Suites Hotel, with a Hyatt Regency tower due in 2028. Visitor numbers are rising alongside: 271,000 arrivals in January to July 2026, with a target of 500,000 for the year.
Air links widened, with United from Houston in April 2024, Avianca to Bogotá in December 2024 and KLM to Amsterdam in June 2025. The region got more volatile at the same time. On January 3, 2026 a US strike on Caracas to capture Nicolás Maduro cancelled JetBlue, United and KLM flights at CJIA for a day, and Venezuela's acting president told the UN in September 2026 that she still wants Essequibo negotiated, not adjudicated.
The overland route south is improving. The 121 km Linden to Mabura Hill section of the Lethem road, being rebuilt as asphalt, was about 80 percent finished in September 2026, and a contract was signed for the next 30 km to Kurupukari. The Suriname ferry went the other way. The MV Canawaima was suspended for six days in August 2026, resumed on August 29, was cleared only provisionally through September 28, and reaches the end of its working life in 2027.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Kaieteur Falls is an easy, cheap day trip you can sort out when you arrive." Wikivoyage still quotes US$200 to 300, but Evergreen Adventures lists its standard Kaieteur day at US$350 in October 2026, and domestic carriers warned in April 2026 that fuel costs would push fares up. Wikivoyage also notes that many day trips fly only on Sundays, and you're weighed at check-in, so book before you arrive and build the rest of your plan around the departure day.
"Stabroek Market is the city's essential sight, so wander in and soak it up." The UK lists Stabroek Market by name as a place where foreign and Guyanese nationals have been targeted. See the iron building and clock tower from outside in daylight, and do your market eating at Bourda Market with a guide, like the Wilderness Explorers market tour that ends with lunch at a chef's Backyard Café.
"There are no ATMs at the airport and only Scotiabank in town will take your card." That line from older guides is half out of date. CJIA now has Scotiabank and Republic Bank ATMs in arrivals, though only Scotiabank accepts international cards there. Banks cap daily withdrawals for foreigners at around G$100,000 (about US$475), so pay lodges and operators ahead by card or transfer.
"Oil money has made Georgetown a modern, comfortable city." The money is real but uneven. In 2026 petrol ran out at the pumps in April, transport operators imposed unapproved fare hikes in May that left passengers stranded at the Parika and Bartica stellings, and the UK still describes medical facilities as very limited even in Georgetown. Bring travel insurance that covers evacuation, and treat the new hotels as islands rather than proof the whole city has changed.
"Ride the minibuses like locals do; it's the authentic way to get around." Canada says the minibuses tend to be overloaded, poorly maintained and badly driven, and the UK says avoid them unless pre-booked. In a city where a taxi hop costs about G$400 (US$2), the savings aren't worth it. Book cars through your hotel or a company you trust.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about timing your stay around a Sunday? From about 5 pm the Seawall fills with families, couples and pop-up bars, music plays out of car trunks, and street food vendors set up along the narrow strip by the Atlantic. It's the most relaxed and sociable Georgetown gets. Go by taxi, stay where the crowd is, and leave before it thins, or join Wilderness Explorers' evening outing, US$160 a person for two.
Walk the wooden city in daylight. St. George's Cathedral on Church Street, designed by Arthur Blomfield, opened in 1892 and rises 43.5 meters, one of the tallest timber churches anywhere. From there it's a short walk to the 1889 Gothic City Hall, the Victoria Law Courts and the iron Stabroek Market clock tower. The free Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology on Main Street is the best hour you'll spend indoors, with two floors on Guyana's Indigenous peoples.
Eat through the mix. Pepperpot, one of the national dishes, is a slow-cooked stew of beef, pork or mutton with hot peppers, cinnamon and cassareep. Shanta's Puri Shop at Camp and New Market Streets is a Wikivoyage standby for roti, dhalpuri and curries. On the Wilderness Explorers market tour, a local chef shops Bourda Market with you, then cooks lunch from it at his Backyard Café. Drink Banks beer and El Dorado rum.
Make an early start for the Mahaica River, under an hour's drive east of the city. The boat trip is one of the surest places to see the hoatzin, Guyana's prehistoric-looking national bird, which feeds along the banks, with occasional giant river otters and howler monkeys. Evergreen Adventures lists its three to four hour trip at US$125.
Kaieteur Falls drops 226 meters (741 feet) in one plunge off a sandstone cliff on the Potaro River, one of the most powerful single drops in the world. The standard day is an hour's flight from Ogle each way and about 90 minutes of guided walking between viewpoints, with a chance at the golden frog and Guianan cock-of-the-rock. Pay the extra for Evergreen's version that adds Orinduik Falls (US$440) if you want a swim below falls that step down over red jasper with the Pakaraima Mountains behind.
Go south to the Rupununi. Scheduled flights from Ogle reach Lethem and stop at Fairview, the strip for Iwokrama's River Lodge, eight solar-powered cabins on the Essequibo with a 30-meter canopy walkway at Atta. Community lodges such as Surama Eco-Lodge and Rewa Eco-Lodge are why this region rewards curiosity, since you stay as the guest of an Indigenous community rather than a resort. Give it four nights minimum.
The Part Most Guides Miss
Georgetown is a city built below the sea, and you can read that engineering on a walk. The Dutch-era grid of canals drains through kokers, wooden or steel sluice gates that open at low tide to let water out to the Atlantic and close as it rises. The seawall that everyone calls unimpressive is the reason the city exists at all, since parts of it sit as much as six feet under high tide. Watch a koker on a falling tide, then walk the wall at sunset, and the whole place starts to make sense.
Where to Base Yourself
Seawall and river mouth. The north tip where the Demerara meets the Atlantic holds the Guyana Marriott on Battery Road and the Pegasus complex on Seawall Road, whose new suites tower is now Hyatt-affiliated as the Atlantic Suites Hotel. Best for a first night after a late flight, with a sea breeze and the Sunday Seawall at the door. The catch is price and isolation, since these are business hotels, and you'll take a taxi almost everywhere.
Main Street and the old center. Around Main, Quamina and Camp Streets you're closest to the cathedral, museums and Promenade Gardens. Cara Lodge, a heritage house from the 1840s with the Bottle restaurant, El Dorado Inn and the new Plaza Hotel on Main Street are all here. It suits travelers who want character and short daytime walks. The catch is nights, since nearby Tiger Bay is one of the areas the UK names, so take cars after dark.
Ogle. Eleven kilometers east, beside the domestic airport, the 150-room AC Marriott opened in January 2026. If your trip is Kaieteur on day two and the Rupununi on day four, staying here saves early-morning drives across town for check-in. The catch is you're out of the city entirely, with little worth walking to.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Budget for an expensive country. There's barely a hostel tier. Hostelworld listed zero hostels in all of Guyana in October 2026, and the few cheap guesthouses Wikivoyage names are fan-cooled rooms above bars or long-dated listings. A careful budget day, using Wikivoyage's listings for a plain guesthouse or small hotel at US$45 to 75, cookshop meals and a few G$400 taxi hops, comes to roughly US$80 to 110. Mid-range, with a Cara Lodge or Pegasus-level room from about US$125 to 150 and one guided outing at US$125 to 270 a head, runs US$250 to 400. Comfortable travel with flights to the interior starts at US$500 a day, since a Kaieteur day alone is US$350. Wikivoyage warns that some hotels post rates before tax, so ask for the all-in price.
Safety is the defining reality. The US rates Guyana Level 3, Reconsider Travel. The UK says attacks and muggings happen in daylight, more at night, sometimes with knives or guns, and lists Stabroek Market, Tiger Bay, Albouystown, Sophia, Buxton and Agricola, plus assaults on visitors in the Botanical Gardens. Canada says criminals often watch targets for days, and foreigners have been robbed at gunpoint after withdrawing money at banks. In practice, that means no flashy watches or jewelry, ATMs only inside banks or malls, cars booked by the hotel, and no walking after dark. The tourism authority calls the interior one of the safest places in the world; Canada disagrees, citing low police presence there.
Health and paperwork matter more than usual. Carry the yellow fever certificate if you're arriving from a risk country, and take precautions against dengue, chikungunya and, in parts of the interior, malaria. Medical facilities are very limited even in Georgetown, so evacuation cover is the real point of your insurance. Emergency numbers are 911 for police and 913 for an ambulance. Drink filtered or bottled water. Be wary of anyone offering free flights to Guyana in return for carrying a package; the UK warns this is a drug-mule setup and airport searches target that profile.
Same-sex sexual activity between men is illegal and theoretically carries a life sentence, though the UK notes the law is rarely enforced and local support for LGBT+ rights is growing. Public affection draws negative attention, and there's no gay bar scene to speak of. Politics and race, especially between Indo- and Afro-Guyanese communities, are sensitive; listen more than you opine. Guyana runs on cash in Guyanese dollars at about G$210 to US$1, though US dollars are accepted in many hotels and shops.

If Georgetown Is Part of a Longer Trip
Georgetown is the obvious first or last stop on a run through the Guianas. To Suriname, ride at least three hours east by minibus to Moleson Creek for the Canawaima ferry to South Drain. Wikivoyage's December 2025 notes put the fare at US$20 one way or US$30 return, cash in US or Suriname dollars only, with border formalities that need an hour or more before sailing. In 2026 that ferry is the weak link, suspended for a week in August and nearing retirement, so have a backup: MidasSur flies Ogle to Paramaribo's in-town airport at 6:30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. From Paramaribo, French Guiana is the next border east.
Going south to Brazil, the road runs to Lethem and over the Takutu Bridge to Bonfim. Wikivoyage says the overnight bus from Charlotte Street takes at least 10 hours and longer in rain; the newly paved Linden to Mabura Hill stretch is shortening the first leg, but the savanna section stays rough. Bonfim puts you on Brazil's road network, the long way round to Manaus. Flying to Lethem and spending a few nights in the Rupununi first breaks the trip sensibly. There's no official land crossing into Venezuela, and Canada advises caution near that border.
By air, Georgetown connects more than its size suggests: Port of Spain, Barbados, Panama City, Bogotá, Miami, New York and Amsterdam. That makes it a natural open-jaw point, flying into Georgetown and out of Paramaribo or Manaus after going overland, which is the kind of routing AirTreks builds into multi-stop and round-the-world tickets.
Yearly Things to Consider
Two rainy seasons drive the calendar, not temperature, which barely moves from 85°F to 89°F all year. The Guyana Tourism Authority puts the coast's dry seasons at mid-January to May and mid-July to mid-November, and the interior's at January to early May and September to December. That makes September to November the best overall window, with Georgetown's driest months, with October averaging under 3 inches at the Botanical Gardens, and the savannas and Kaieteur trails dry too.
The counterintuitive part is that the wet season is when Kaieteur looks its most powerful and river travel is easiest, since high water floods the forest and lifts boats toward the canopy for birding. If you want festivals, Mashramani brings float parades and costumed bands to the city on February 23, and the Rupununi Ranchers' Rodeo takes over Lethem at Easter. Book interior flights well ahead for both.
Georgetown month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 85°F (30°C) | 9.4 in | Shoulder | Tail of the short rains; dry season starts mid-month. |
| February | 86°F (30°C) | 5.0 in | High | Mashramani float parade on February 23. |
| March | 88°F (31°C) | 3.9 in | High | Dry on coast and in interior; good Rupununi month. |
| April | 87°F (31°C) | 5.6 in | High | Rupununi Ranchers' Rodeo in Lethem at Easter; book flights early. |
| May | 86°F (30°C) | 11.3 in | Low | Main rains begin; 2026 marked 60 years of independence in late May. |
| June | 86°F (30°C) | 11.9 in | Low | Wettest month; Kaieteur at full volume, savanna roads rough. |
| July | 86°F (30°C) | 11.1 in | Shoulder | Rain eases mid-month; July 2026 set an arrivals record. |
| August | 88°F (31°C) | 6.6 in | Shoulder | Coast drying out after the main rains. |
| September | 88°F (31°C) | 3.6 in | High | Dry on coast and interior; strong birding and trail month. |
| October | 89°F (32°C) | 2.7 in | High | Driest month in the city; hottest afternoons. |
| November | 88°F (31°C) | 7.7 in | Shoulder | Short rains return from mid-month on the coast. |
| December | 86°F (30°C) | 10.9 in | Shoulder | Short rainy season; interior still drier than the coast. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Georgetown
Day one, after an airport pickup, walk the old center in daylight: St. George's Cathedral, City Hall, the Stabroek clock tower from outside and the Walter Roth Museum, then dinner at your hotel or a taxi to a known restaurant. Day two is Kaieteur, with a late-morning check-in at Ogle, an hour's flight, the viewpoints and back by early evening. Day three, the Mahaica River in the morning, then the Botanical Gardens manatee pond and Castellani House with company, and an evening flight out. If day three is a Sunday, swap the gardens for the Seawall.
5 Days in Georgetown
Use the three-day plan, then add a guided Bourda Market morning ending with lunch at the Backyard Café, and keep the fifth day loose as a weather buffer for Kaieteur, which is the trip's fixed point. If the falls go to plan on day two, spend the spare evening on Evergreen's two-hour Demerara sunset cruise (US$125), which runs under the new and old bridges, or take Evergreen's Kaieteur and Orinduik combination instead of the standard Kaieteur day. Fit a Sunday evening on the Seawall in somewhere; it's the city's best few hours.
1 Week in Georgetown
Two nights in Georgetown with Kaieteur, then fly from Ogle to Fairview for three nights at Iwokrama River Lodge, with the canopy walkway at Atta and river trips on the Essequibo. Move on to a community lodge such as Surama for two nights of savanna walks and village life, and fly back from Lethem. It's a packaged-feeling route on paper, but the lodges are small and community-run, and this is the week that makes the airfare to Guyana make sense.
2 Weeks or More in Georgetown
Two weeks lets you link the Guianas. Start with three Georgetown nights, Kaieteur and the Mahaica River, then a week in the Rupununi split between Iwokrama, Surama and Rewa, timed for the September to November dry season or Easter rodeo. Come back to the city for a night, then cross to Suriname by the Moleson Creek ferry or the Ogle to Paramaribo flight for Paramaribo's UNESCO-listed inner city, the other half of the Dutch colonial story you saw in Georgetown.

Georgetown Travel FAQ
Both. Many hotels, tour operators and shops quote and accept US dollars, but taxis, markets and minibuses run on Guyanese dollars, at about G$210 to US$1 in October 2026. Change money at banks or licensed cambios and keep the receipts, as the tourism authority advises, and never change on the street.
The tourism authority lists 240V at 60 Hz as standard, but some buildings run 110V or 220V. Check that your devices are dual-voltage before plugging in, and bring a surge-protected adapter for laptops and camera chargers.
Roaming mostly works in urban areas. Buy a local SIM card from Digicel or One Communications in Georgetown for cheaper data, and expect little or no signal at many interior lodges, which often run on solar and generators.
