Almaty

Almaty in 2026 is a city of 2.35 million with a 3,200-meter ridge for a back garden. A ₸12,000 gondola runs from Medeu's ice rink to Talgar Pass, Eater put the city on its 2026 where-to-eat list, and Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes sit a long drive east.

BootsnAll Scorecard

7.0 / 10

Almaty scores best on what things cost and what you eat, and loses points on transport, because the city is easy and the famous landscapes are not. Plan for the mountains to be the trip and the city to be the base.

Value
8
At the 8 anchor, with Hostelworld dorms from about US$6 to $19, a ₸120 metro ride and a ₸3,200 burger combo at Bahandi, though the ₸12,000 Shymbulak gondola and ₸10,000 Kok Tobe cable car are priced for visitors.
Getting around
5.5
Just above the 5 anchor, because the metro is one line of 11 stations and buses want an Onay card, while Charyn and the Kolsai lakes, 200 km and more east, need a car, a driver or a tour.
Crowds and timing
6.5
Between 5 and 8, since crowding is local, but April is the wettest month at 4.4 inches, winter inversions trap smog under 33°F (1°C) highs, and July highs reach 87°F (31°C).
Safety and hassle
7
Below the 8 anchor because the documented problems are specific and real, from airport drivers who claim the fare was per kilometer to drink spiking in nightclubs and police asking foreigners for cash fines.
Food and drink
8
At the 8 anchor, with lunch canteens around ₸3,000, Uyghur, Uzbek and Korean cooking alongside Kazakh, and Auyl and Ogonyok on La Liste 2026, though vegetarians will eat a lot of salad and samsa.
Indie fit
7
Medeu, Shymbulak and the foothill trails are a city bus away and Saty's guesthouses make Kolsai an easy overnight, but Russian does the heavy lifting and the far landscapes push most people onto tours.

Overview and Things to Consider

Almaty is a Soviet grid city laid against a wall of mountains. The streets run gently uphill to the south, so locals give directions as up and down, and on a clear morning the snow on the Trans-Ili Alatau looks close enough to touch from Panfilov Street. The city has no old town and few grand monuments. What it has is shade, cafes, a lot of money by Central Asian standards, and a ski resort you reach by city bus and gondola.

You'll love Almaty if you want mountains without giving up good coffee, if you're stitching together a Central Asia trip and need a comfortable hub, or if you eat meat with enthusiasm. You'll hate it if you came for the tiled madrasas of Uzbekistan, because the nomads who lived here built none, or if you need to get everywhere by train. The landscapes on the posters, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes, are 200 to 300 km away on roads with no useful bus.

The 2026 moment is about food and flights. Eater put Almaty on its Where to Eat 2026 list, two local restaurants made La Liste, and Auyl, in the Medeu gorge, landed on The World's 50 Best Discovery. The new international terminal at Almaty International has been open since June 2024, and Air Astana and foreign carriers keep adding routes east and south.

Kok Tobe is overrated. The hilltop park at the end of the cable car is a fenced funfair with a small zoo of hens and goats, and the same money buys most of the way up Shymbulak.

How Almaty Got Here

Almaty is young. Bronze Age herders and Saka tribes left burial mounds across the foothills, including the Issyk kurgan where the Golden Man was found, but the city began on February 4, 1854, as a Russian wooden fort between the Big and Little Almatinka rivers. The town around it was named Verny. An earthquake nearly destroyed it on May 28, 1887, and the Kebin quake of January 3, 1911, brought down more than 770 brick buildings. The same 1911 quake dammed the gorge that became Lake Kaindy, and the wooden Ascension Cathedral, finished in 1907, rode it out.

The Soviets renamed the town Alma-Ata in 1921, the Turkestan-Siberia railway arrived by 1930, and it became the capital of the Kazakh republic. Trotsky spent 1928 here in exile. During World War II more than 30 factories, 15 institutes and universities and the film studios of Moscow, Leningrad and Kyiv were evacuated here, and so many Russians arrived that Kazakhs became a minority. Russian, Uyghur and Korean communities still live alongside Kazakhs. On December 16, 1986, the Jeltoqsan protests on what is now Republic Square were one of the first cracks in Soviet rule.

After independence the city took the Kazakh name Almaty in January 1993 and lost the capital to Akmola, now Astana, in 1997. It kept the money, the universities and the restaurants. In January 2022 protests that began over fuel prices turned into riots here, and the city hall on Republic Square was stormed and burned.

Getting There and Around

Almaty International Airport (ALA) sits 15 km northeast of the center and handled 11.4 million passengers in 2024, the busiest airport in Central Asia. International flights use Terminal 2, opened in June 2024 and joined to the older domestic terminal by an indoor bridge. Direct flights come from Istanbul, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Seoul, Delhi, Bangkok, Tbilisi and much of China, so most Western travelers connect once.

The airport's own page lists bus 92 from both terminals to Mamyr-2 from 06:00 to 23:00 and night bus 3 to Orbita-2 from 23:00 to 06:00, each ₸120 with an Onay transport card, which is sold on the first floor of the international terminal in arrivals. Wikivoyage puts the cash fare at ₸200 and the run to the center at about 30 minutes; bus 92 crosses Raiymbek Avenue near the Almaty-2 station and the metro. For a car, use the official Taxi Point stand, which runs 24 hours at fixed fares by category, or Yandex Go, whose Economy fare starts at ₸400 and caps at ₸58 a km plus ₸27 a minute before surge.

US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian passport holders can enter Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 days at a time, with no more than 90 days in any 180. The UK government's March 2026 advice wants your passport valid for at least 30 days past arrival with a blank page, and says your hotel or host must register you with the authorities within three working days. Kazakhstan's official QazETA portal handles e-visas and electronic travel authorizations and has a checker that tells you which document your passport needs; run it before you fly.

In town, the metro is one line with 11 stations, running from Raiymbek Batyr south under Nazarbayev Avenue and west under Abay to Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, 06:20 to midnight, ₸120 a ride on a token or card, with bags scanned at the entrance. Buses and trolleybuses cover everything else, and some conductors refuse cash in favor of the Onay card, ₸800 at Caravan newsstands. The Onay app needs a Kazakh phone number. Yandex Go does the work of Uber, and Yandex and Whoosh scooters are everywhere, often on the sidewalk.

What's Changed Since 2016

January 2022 changed the center more than any building project. The protests that began in Zhanaozen on January 2 over gas prices became a week of riots in Almaty, 227 people were killed nationwide by January 19, and protesters stormed and burned the city hall on Republic Square, the same square where the Jeltoqsan protests broke out in 1986.

The metro grew in May 2022, when a 3.1 km extension added Sary-Arka and Bauyrzhan Momyshuly stations and daily ridership climbed to about 80,000 on weekdays. The next extension west to Qalqaman, once promised for 2025, is now expected in 2027. Medeu went year-round the same June, laying a roller rink and a 4,000-square-meter graffiti floor over the ice for summer.

Terminal 2 opened at the airport on June 1, 2024, lifting capacity to 14 million passengers a year. Routes keep shifting with geopolitics. Air Astana suspended Dubai from July 21, 2026, citing security around the Strait of Hormuz, and only restarted Almaty to Dubai on October 1, at four flights a week rising to 12, with a warning that the schedule may change again. That matters if you planned to connect through the Gulf. Air Astana is due to start Tokyo Narita on November 30, 2026, and Cathay Pacific plans three weekly A330 flights from Hong Kong from the first quarter of 2027.

The rules for visitors tightened. On December 30, 2025, Kazakhstan introduced a law banning the promotion of non-traditional sexual orientation, with fines, detention or deportation for perceived breaches. The UK government's March 2026 advice also flags that a local SIM is blocked after 30 days unless the phone's IMEI is verified through a portal that needs a Kazakh ID number.

The food world noticed in summer 2026. Visit Almaty reported in August that Eater had named Almaty one of its 2026 destinations, citing beshbarmak, kazy, baursak and lagman and the city's first food festival, and that Auyl and Ogonyok had made La Liste's 1,000 restaurants for 2026.

What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong

"The airport buses aren't running, so take my taxi." Bus 92 runs from both terminals 06:00 to 23:00 and night bus 3 covers the rest, both ₸120 by Onay card. Wikivoyage reports drivers who quote ₸1,500 and at the end insist it was per kilometer. Use the Taxi Point desk or Yandex Go, where the price is in the app.

"Ride the Kok Tobe cable car for the best mountain views." Kok Tobe is a hill in the foothills with a fenced funfair on top, and the cable car is ₸10,000 return. The park's own bus from Omarova Street is ₸3,000 return. For ₸12,000 the Shymbulak gondola takes you from Medeu to Talgar Pass at 3,200 m.

"Big Almaty Lake is a short walk from the bus, and you can swim in it." Swimming is prohibited, because the lake at 2,511 m is a main source of Almaty's drinking water. Bus 28 stops well short, and on foot it's about 15 km and 1,000 m of climbing. Most people take a taxi to within 4 km or go with a driver.

"Charyn Canyon is Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon and an easy day trip." It's about 200 km east with no regular bus, and the part most people see, the Valley of Castles, is a 5 km round-trip walk that tops 40°C in summer. It's far better as the first stop on a two-day loop to the Kolsai lakes, sleeping in Saty.

"You have to register with the migration police (OVIR) yourself after you arrive." The old registration card was dropped in 2020, according to Wikivoyage. The UK government's current advice is that your hotel or host registers your arrival within three working days, so in practice you hand over your passport at check-in.

"Bring crisp dollars, because cards won't work outside big hotels." Most businesses take payment through Kaspi or Halyk terminals, and Wikivoyage reports that every one of those terminals has a card reader for foreign debit and credit cards. Old dollars are the problem: the UK government warns that official exchange booths may refuse damaged notes or US bills printed before 2013.

Ideas to Consider for Your Visit

Have you thought about spending a whole day going up? City bus 12 climbs Dostyk Avenue to Medeu, at 1,691 m the high-altitude rink where more than 200 world records have been set. Climb the 842 steps of the mudflow dam behind it, the dam that stopped 4.5 million cubic meters of water and debris in 1973. Then take the Shymbulak gondola through Shymbulak to Combi-2 on Talgar Pass. An adult round trip is ₸12,000 in October 2026, the lower gondola runs 09:00 to 19:00, and the top lift stops at 16:30. The summer season ends October 18, and all three lifts close for maintenance from October 19 to November 1, 2026.

The Green Bazaar on Zenkov Street is where to learn what Kazakhs eat. Go in the morning, Tuesday to Sunday, and walk the meat hall for kazy, the horse-meat sausage, then the dairy counters, and buy lunch by pointing. Prices are high for Central Asia, and the market closes on Mondays. Afterward walk two blocks to Panfilov Park and the Ascension Cathedral, 56 m of wood painted the colors of a wedding cake, and the Museum of Kazakh Musical Instruments, ₸1,500, in a carved wooden house on Zenkov.

For dinner with a view, Auyl sits in the eco-hotel Qazaq Auyl at 586 Kerey-Zhanibek Khandar Street on the Medeu road, cooking Kazakh food in a modern way. Ogonyok builds its menu around fire and local produce. For everyday eating, look for Uyghur lagman, hand-pulled noodles in a meaty sauce, and plov at any Uzbek place. Order beshbarmak, horse or lamb over sheets of pasta, for a group, because one portion feeds two or three. Bahandi, a local burger chain, is the cheap fallback.

Big Almaty Lake, 15 km south and 2,511 m up, turns turquoise in early fall under Soviet Peak, at 4,317 m. Swimming is banned. Take bus 28 up Dulati Street to its last stop before Alma-Arasan and a taxi for the climb, or hire a driver for the round trip. You pay a small per-person entry fee at the Ile-Alatau National Park checkpoint, and the park takes payment through the Kaspi app. Children under 7 and pensioners go free.

The big trip east is Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes, best done over two days. Charyn's Valley of Castles is about 200 km out, a 5 km round-trip walk through red sandstone. The Kolsai lakes are about 92 km beyond, above the village of Saty and its guesthouses. Lower Kolsai, at 1,818 m, is reachable by road, Middle Kolsai is 5 km uphill on foot or horseback, and Lake Kaindy, 11 km east, is the lake with dead spruce trunks standing in the water. You'll need a car, a driver or a tour.

In winter, go to a banya. Almaty has some 30 bathhouses with Moroccan, Nordic and Russian rooms, and in the Russian ones half the point is beating yourself with veniki, bundles of leafy twigs. Arasan, at Tulebaev 78 near Panfilov Park, is open 07:00 to 22:30 daily. This is how the city gets through the cold months.

Spend an evening on the Golden Square, the Stalin-era blocks bounded by Jeltoqsan, Bogenbai, Kunaev and Abay. The pastel facades and neo-Russian trim were built for the Soviet elite, and poets and politicians lived here. Finish at the Abai Opera and Ballet Theater, founded in 1934, at Kabanbay Batyr 110, for whatever is on that night.

The Part Most Guides Miss

Almaty is where the apple comes from. The wild forests of Malus sieversii on the slopes of the Tian Shan are considered the ancestor of the eating apple, a theory the Soviet botanist Nikolai Vavilov advanced, and the city's old name, Alma-Ata, is usually read as a reference to apples. The Ile-Alatau National Park, which starts at the city's southern edge, lists a Sievers apple genetic reserve among its 43 marked routes. Most guides send you to the funfair on Kok Tobe. The better afternoon is a walk in the foothills, among scrubby trees that may be the wild ancestors of the apple in your fruit bowl.

Where to Base Yourself

Golden Square and Panfilov Street. The central grid between Jeltoqsan, Abay, Kunaev and Bogenbai, plus the Panfilov Street esplanade, is the default for a first visit. Almaly and Abay metro stations are close, the Opera and the cafes are on the doorstep, and Wikivoyage lists mid-range B&B doubles nearby at US$60 to $90. The catch is that the metro turns west at Abay, so every trip to the mountains starts with a bus or a taxi.

Zhibek Zholy and the Green Bazaar. North of the center, around the pedestrian Arbat, the TsUM department store and Zhibek Zholy metro station, you're a short walk from the Green Bazaar, Panfilov Park and the Ascension Cathedral. It suits travelers who like markets, cheap canteens and an early start. The catch is that this is the downhill end of a city that rises to the south, so the mountains are farther away.

Upper Dostyk and the foothills. Up toward the mountains, along Dostyk Avenue and the lanes near Kok Tobe's base station at the east end of Abay, you're closest to the foothills, and bus 12 runs up Dostyk to Medeu. It suits hikers and skiers on a longer stay. You'll ride taxis back from the center at night, because the metro doesn't come up here.

Around Almaty-2 station. The blocks off Abylai Khan and Raiymbek near the main railway station have simple hotels such as the Tahar, 300 m south of the station with no air conditioning, plus the northern end of the metro and bus 92 to the airport. It makes sense for one night before an early train, though Bishkek buses leave from Sayran, 8 km west. Wikivoyage sums up the Apelsin Hostel by the station as for when you're stuck, which is about right.

Realities to Be Aware Of

Budget travelers can live on roughly US$25 to $40 a day. That's a Hostelworld dorm at US$6 to $19, two canteen lunches at around ₸3,000 each, ₸120 metro rides and a ₸3,200 burger combo. Mid-range runs about US$100 to $140 a day once you add a central double at US$60 to $90 and one mountain ticket such as the ₸12,000 gondola. Above that, the money goes on private drivers to Charyn and Kolsai and on dinners at places like Auyl. At ₸448 to the dollar in October 2026, prices are easy to convert in your head.

The real risks in Almaty are specific. The UK government flags robberies near nightclubs late at night, drink spiking, pickpockets in markets and on buses, and card skimming at street ATMs. Wikivoyage adds police who stop foreigners late at night and ask for a ₸1,000 to ₸5,000 cash fine, and scooter riders, often drunk after dark, on the sidewalks. Carry your original passport, because police may ask for ID and copies don't count.

Some laws catch visitors out. Shops can't sell alcohol between 23:00 and 08:00, or anything over 30 percent between 21:00 and noon, while bars are exempt. Drinking in the street can get you a night in a cell. Selling or importing vapes is illegal, flying a drone needs a license, and posting images that insult the flag or religion can bring a fine or prison. Same-sex activity is legal, but since December 2025 the law bans promoting it, and public acceptance is limited.

Most people in Almaty speak Russian first and Kazakh second, and English is common only in tourist-facing businesses, so a translation app earns its keep. Winter brings the city's worst air, when temperature inversions trap smog under the mountains. In the hills the UK government warns of ticks, altitude sickness and fast weather changes. The city runs rescue teams in the Shymbulak gorge and at Big Almaty Lake, reached on 109 or 112.

If Almaty Is Part of a Longer Trip

Almaty is the natural first or last stop on an overland loop through Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is the easy neighbor. Sayran bus station on Tole Bi sends buses to Bishkek at 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 18:00 from ₸3,225, about four hours, and one bus a day to Karakol on Issyk-Kul in about eight. The prettier route to Karakol goes east past Charyn to Kegen and crosses into the Karkara valley.

For Uzbekistan, sleeper buses leave Sayran for Tashkent at 17:00 and 18:00 from ₸12,900, about 14 hours, and a train runs every second day from Almaty-2 in about 16. China is open by road. Buses run daily to Yining, Khorgos and, from ₸26,875, Ürümqi in about 19 hours, where you can pick up China's high-speed rail toward Xi'an and Beijing. Wikivoyage reports the Almaty to China passenger trains have not resumed since COVID.

Within Kazakhstan, Astana is a long way north. The quickest train takes around 13 hours, and most people fly. By air Almaty works as a hinge between Europe and Asia, with Air Astana flying to Istanbul, London, Frankfurt, Delhi, Bangkok, Seoul and Beijing, and Tokyo from November 2026. That makes it a useful stopover on a multi-stop or round-the-world route. A specialist like AirTreks can build Almaty in as a stop rather than a connection, which matters after Air Astana's two-month Gulf suspension showed how fast routings via Dubai can be cut.

Yearly Things to Consider

Almaty's seasons are set by the mountains. The best months are mid-May to June and September to mid-October, when the city is green, highs run from the 60s to the low 80s°F (17 to 28°C). April is the wettest month, and snow has fallen in the city as late as mid-May. July and August are hot in town at about 87°F (31°C) but the right time for high hiking above Big Almaty Lake and Kolsai. The ski season at Shymbulak runs November to April.

The counterintuitive pick is late September into October. Big Almaty Lake turns its deepest turquoise in fall, September is the driest month of the year, and Charyn's summer heat, which can pass 40°C, is gone. Winter is a fine time for skiing and banyas, but be ready for grey, smoggy days in the city between the two. Nauryz, the spring new year festival, falls on or around March 21.

Ideas for Itineraries

3 Days in Almaty

Day one is the center on foot: the Green Bazaar in the morning, Panfilov Park and the Ascension Cathedral, the Museum of Kazakh Musical Instruments, then the Golden Square and a night at the Opera or a long dinner. Day two goes up, taking bus 12 to Medeu, the 842 steps of the dam, and the gondola to Talgar Pass (closed October 19 to November 1, 2026), back down for dinner at Auyl on the Medeu road. Day three is Big Almaty Lake by taxi or driver in the morning, and a banya at Arasan in the afternoon.

5 Days in Almaty

Do the three-day plan, then spend days four and five on the loop east. Leave early for Charyn Canyon and walk the Valley of Castles before the heat, continue to Saty for the night, and walk or ride from Lower Kolsai to Middle Kolsai the next morning. Stop at Lake Kaindy on the drive back. A shared tour is cheapest. A private driver lets you stay at the lakes past the day-trippers.

1 Week in Almaty

Add two days to the five-day plan. Use one for a proper hike from Medeu, to Furmanov Peak or Kok-Zhailau, both two or three hours from the main bus stop. Use the other for the city itself, with the Central State Museum on Nazarbayev Avenue, the Kasteyev art museum and a slow afternoon in the cafes on Panfilov. If it's winter, swap the hikes for two days of skiing at Shymbulak, with the gondola from Medeu so you never need a car.

2 Weeks or More in Almaty

Two weeks lets you treat Almaty as a base. Rent an apartment in the Golden Square or uphill off Dostyk, buy an Onay card and get an eSIM, since a local SIM gets blocked after 30 days without IMEI registration. Spend weekdays working from the cafes and weekends in the mountains. Take one weekend for Charyn and Kolsai with a night in Saty, and another for Bishkek, four hours away by bus, which resets nothing on your 90 days but changes the scenery.

Almaty Travel FAQ

Almaty, unless you specifically want to see a planned capital. Astana has held the government since 1997 and has the showcase architecture, but it sits far to the north on the open steppe, 13 hours away by the quickest train, with no mountains on the doorstep. Almaty has the food, the cafes, the ski resort and the lakes. If you have time for both, fly between them.

It helps a lot. Russian is the everyday language of the city and Kazakh is the state language, while English is reliable mainly in hotels, tourist businesses and newer cafes. Menus in ordinary canteens are often Russian-only. A translation app with offline Russian and a few phrases go a long way.

UTC+5. Kazakhstan moved to a single national time zone at midnight on March 1, 2024, which put Almaty an hour behind where it used to be. Old timetables, apps that haven't updated and older guidebooks can still show UTC+6, so check flight and train times against the operator.

You can make as many 30-day visa-free visits as you like, but the UK government's advice is clear that you can't spend more than 90 days without a visa in any 180-day period. A trip to Bishkek starts a new 30-day stay, and it doesn't reset the 90-day total.

The trails from Medeu and Shymbulak start at bus stops, but the UK government advises against trekking alone and warns of avalanches, rockfall and fast weather changes. The city has installed 18 refuges in remote spots with first-aid kits and SOS buttons, and mountain rescue answers on 109 or 112. Tell someone your route and turn around early in autumn, when snow can close paths.

Yes. Almaty sits in an active seismic zone, and quakes in 1887 and 1911 flattened the town. Most of the housing blocks built from the late 1960s were designed to be earthquake-proof, and the Ascension Cathedral survived 1911. Read the US FEMA earthquake advice the UK government links to, and note the exits in your hotel.
